Reaper makes the best mini's for D&D.

I-Kore makes excellent Sci-Fi mini's (thier VOID line).

The Crocidile Games Aegyptus miniatures are just plain cool, and I use the Rackham Confrontation mini's for some things, but they are a little too pricey to start a large collection.

And for Wierd Wars, I actually found a bag of "green army men" that are almost exactly 28mm scale! I painted up four of them, and they look great. (and cost about 10 cents a piece).

Reaper is my favorite. I really like thier variety and price. I just finished painting the Warmaiden Krista armed with sword and shield. I have a bunch of old Ral Partha minis that are good and I was sorry to see them stop producing minis. Ral Partha was the first company I ever bought minis from well over 15 years ago.

I have been collecting the Games-Workshop LOTR mini line. I really like them, the only downside is the cost. I have the old GW Warhammer Quest boxed set. There are tons of minis included that I use for my campaign. I have only bought one GW single mini and I was happy with the quality but not the cost.

I also have a few minis from the Chainmail line although I do not play the game. I just finished painting the Gray Elf Wizard to for one of my players to represent his character in my campaign. Not a bad figure. There are a few more from the chainmail line that look good and I might try to pick up.

I like Games Workshop and WotC's Chainmail line.

Reaper and Confrontation have a lot of nice ones too, I just stay away from mail-ordering minis. Too many bad experiences in the past. Why couldn't my local gaming store have them :(

I've got a lot of MageKnight figs. They're great for using as PC and NPC's, and if (ahem...when) my players get rough with the figures I don't cringe hoping they don't break them or worse yet, screw up a really nice nice paint job :p

Yup definately Reaper is my favorite. I just returned from my local gaming store with a few goodies. I picked Blorg the Hill Giant (the thing is freaking huge!!), Lesser Elementals, Fire Elemental and Earth Elemental.

I am not happy with mail order either. I ordered a bunch of minis from Reaper over a month ago and still have not received them. I am hoping they will be in by next week. From now on I will see if my game store can get them for me.

I love Reaper. Fortunately, my FLGS has every single one (in numeric order!!!)! And the folks at Reaper know one of the managers personally, as she has a habit of coordinating demanding email campaigns. :)

For my games I'll have the players peruse the Reaper catalog on line, and send me the order number. Then I pick them up and sometimes paint them.

If any of you folks live in New England, it's Wizard's Tower in Nashua NH, right off Route 3.

PS

I'll just add my voice to the chorus: Reaper, without a close competitor in sight.

The level of "neato" detail on them is unmatched in my experience.

I'm also fairly fond of the Orcs available from Games Workshop, not so much because they are good looking (they share the Giant head/Giant hands of most Warhammer figs), but becasue they are so easily customizable.

But really, my answer is Reaper

Reaper (or sometimes Chainmail) for PCs.
Wiz-kids for monsters/NPCs.

Seems to be a good balance between expense and coolness factors.

Definitely Reaper. Not only because they look great, but also because the company's pretty cool, too. They sponsered the Gran March's first battle interactive by providing nifty mini's to be given away when the monster was killed.
