Favorite Places to Eat

Here in little Waco, Texas we don't have much beyond chains. But my husband and I just went down to Messina Hof winery in Bryan, and ate lunch there. Now, it cost a good bit, but I had the most delicious seafood - pasta dish with a saffron sauce that was out of this world. My husband had a hamburger and sweet potato fries, which he said was delicious. We go down there about once a year to buy our supply of port, so I'm sure we'll go back. They had Rabbit Stew on the menu...

Weirdest set of restaurants I ever saw was in Taiwan. Here's a sampling:

A Scottish theme restaurant called Baden-Baden. Maitre d' wore a kilt, there was a fine selection of (overpriced) whiskey, and it had a spa in the basement. It also had a great view of the Taipei 101 - from above. Note to skyscraper designers: there's not much point having the world's tallest building when you've also got East Asia's second tallest mountain range next to it.

A Mongolian restaurant, which was quite conventional apart from the entrance being a yurt. Yurts tend to stick out in Taipei.

A sushi bar which for some reason was open in the middle of a typhoon and playing what sounded like Taiwanese death metal. Despite these two factors, it was full, though the sushi was very good.

Taiwan's an excellent place to eat out in. Seems that few families eat at home in the evenings - all the places we went to had entire families (including children) eating there - so there's a huge choice even outside of Taipei.

Near me (i.e. within a four-block radius)

Hard Times - A local DC chili chain, pretty good

Moby Dick's - Kabob house chain, the one I go to is right on the least time course between my apartment and the Metro, and the staff recognizes me

Subway - Not because it's good, but the manager of the location by me keeps ordering Mello Yello for me

Not near me -

Rio Grande - Tex-mex place

Cracker Barrel - Good country cookin', I'd kill for their hash brown casserole right now

If they were playing Taiwanese Death Metal, they were probably open BECAUSE there was a typhoon in town!

I rarely go out to eat but when I do it's either Kotipizza (Finland's biggest pizza restaurant-chain) or McDonalds. Yeah, that is kinda boring option.

Big on buffets, especially Asian ones. Maybe a little too much {loosens belt]

cOld country buffet is alright, but the selection just is not that grand usually
Golden corral has some tasty offerings
China city buffet in my town is good and has a modest sushi selection.
New China Buffet on Lemont road & 75th in Darien, IL is darn good.
I want to hit the Todai! Japanese seafood buffet up in the Woodfield Schaumberg, IL mall

I don't know about your area of the country (I'm in D/FW, TX), but I've found that of all the asian cuisines, Vietnamese offers the best version of the staple Egg Roll around.

Yeah, I like Vietnamese but there aren't many places around here that serve it. Typically when you find it its a small column of choices on a Chinese menu. I also have to make sure its udon - during the time I lived in Kiev, Ukraine I discovered that about 30-45 mins after eating buckweat I feel like I am having a heart attack, so really try to avoid soba, although I don't know if the processed flour would hurt me.

In the last few months my wife and I have discovered that the local Chinese place has a second menu, a single page in Chinese and English, with dishes not on the regular menu that they give to asian families that come in. We haven't actually asked for it yet, but keep saying we are going to do so.

Oh, and to add to the list we had Cajun last night.

I havent mentioned Mexican because sometimes it feels like there are more mexican resturaunts in Birmingham than there are churches, and for the middle of the Bible Belt thats saying a lot.

Most of my favorite restaurants are at Disney World. Boma, California Grill and Artist Point top the list.

Closer to home, a place called Christopher's in Cambridge is top of the list. My wife and kids are vegetarians. This restaurant was listed as the "top vegetarian restaurant to bring a non-vegetarian." The menu selection is wonderful, the food is great and the staff is always nice. They have a wide variety - asian, mexican, seafood, burgers and they always know which items use meat or meat stock in the making. Too often my wife has to pass on a dish because nobody seems sure if they use chicken stock in the sauce or something.

Overall, I like a lot of different kinds of food. I think the only thing I've tried that hasn't done much for me is Afghan cuisine. I've tried a couple of different places and something in the different dishes I tried gave them a sour aftertaste I didn't like.

We can't afford to eat out much but when we do-

Benson's
Family resturant with burgers, fish and steak. ...love their tollhouse pie

Northside Diner
As above ... good sized burgers

Friendlys
Ice cream and anything fried... love their waffle fries

Pondarosa
Buffet foods... love their chicken.

Fortune Cookie
Buffet Chinese food. 2 eat for 10 dollars (includes tip)

Christos Pizza
Love their pizza but the pies are 15+ dollars apiece

Price Chopper
Decent and inexpensive pizza and chicken. When I shop on an empty stomach the cart gets very full very fast :D

Mmmm, getting towards lunch time.
For Pizza, its hard to beat Pizza Chicago for Chicago-style pizzas around here.
We have many good Sushi places around, too many to name.
The Original Pancake House is my favorite for Dutch Babys and the vast array of other pancakes they offer.
Bennigans used to have blue cheese chips, potato slices with chunks of blue cheese and dressing. But they removed it from their menu, so they're off our list.
I like Cattleman's or Sundance for steak, and Armadillo Willy's for BBQ.
Clark's has some of the best burgers, but can get expensive if you like to pile it on... ( who thought a 3/4 lb angus with marinated mushrooms, sauteed onions, bacon, cheddar, jalepeno jack, saurkraut, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion rings, etc would run over $20. Mmmm, but never again. )

But almost all that's behind me, now I end up at Fresh Choice or Sweet Tomatoes for salad buffets. Gotta eat healthy.
