Strangely, pushing 40, I'm into metal: Savatage, Blind Guardian, Hammerfall, Sonata Arctica, Iced Earth, Manowar, Saxon - that metal, not the stuff you hear on the radio in the US.

My favorite band, though is Hanoi Rocks - not even close to metal.

Even stranger, my favorite CD is Seven by Enuff Z'nuff, not metal either.

OH, the Evita soundtrack with Madonna and Anotonio Banderas is AWESOME!

Some solid choices, there. Of course, that sort of metal is mainstream in Europe, where "tr00" metal didn't die out in the 90's. IMO though, there is some great work all across the metal genre, and deep into it's various (and disparite [sp?]) sub-genres.

cheers,

Tell me about it. I can't even find any CDs of most of these without going online or driving an hour.

Thank the Metal Gods for eBay!

Some very solid metal there. I've really been getting into Sonata Arctica's latest (Reckoning Night) again lately. I can't wait for their next CD to come out. I hope its more like Reckoning Night than the one before that.

That music is making its way back to the US though, Hammerfall is touring North America again, Sonata is touring in the fall (and playing Prog Power in Atlanta!) Blind Guardian was touring last fall...they are coming out in force!

As far as CDs go, my favorite online shop to frequent is http://www.lasercd.com/ He's got it all, and at good prices.

Oh hell, yeah!

I think Sonata's CD comes out in April or May. They put a track list on their website recently. I'm looking forward to it.

Had things gone my way, I would've made the 5 hour drive to Chicago to see Blind Guardian. :(

PS: Thanks for the link!

I haven't posted in years, I suppose now is as good a time as any to start again. :)

My music choices are so extreme on the spectrum of musical tastes. I would rather state what is cycling through my cd player than what is a favorite because my favorites change with my mood and desires. :)

Right now it is Gogol Bordello - Gypsy Punks, Underdog World Strike; The Knife - Silent Shout; Static X - Wisconsin Death Trip; Primus - Frizzle Fry; Buckethead - (don't know the title); Ozomatli - Live CD fillmore; The Crow - Sndtrk Orig Movie

I have been looking for some good metal lately. The problem is that I can't find something that works with me as I have evolved from where I used to be on it. I love a good hard riff, but can't stand vocals with so much screaming or harshness that all the lyrics are almost impossible to understand. With these limitations in place, does anyone have any suggestiongs?

Welcome back!

Check out Savatage: Dead Winter Dead, great riffs and vocals.

With the exception of some of Manowar's tunes, the stuff I listed is pretty much scream-free. I'm definitely with you on that.

John Norum's solo stuff has seen a lot of play on my winamp lately as well. Check out his 2005 disc, Optimus.

Thanks much!! I love expanding my music collection. My bf and I are really into various musics, and since we live in Austin, we go to a lot of shows (being the live music capital of the US and all :) ) We actually had SXSW come through last week. Tons and tons and tons of bands come through, and all the day shows are free. I finally got to hear Apples in Stereo. I had been curious about them since they were under Elijah Woods new label Simian Records. I was pleasantly surprised. :)

Well, I am definitely NOT a metal fan, but it is always nice to see an old poster pop in again. Welcome back. :)
