Also if he was the first one seen in the US and there is a lot of US ENworlders, that would increase his exposure too.

Not to mention that he was the best Doctor

Jon Pertwee - His very sophisticated and stylish Doctor was great, a very serious air about him. A lot of episodes against the Master and a few good Dalek shows. A lot of great shows on Earth for him since his Tardis was screwed for half his run.

Tom Baker - The first Doc I saw, and nearly as good as Pertwee. A ton of classic episodes and a lot of great assisstants. A good mix of charm and insanity.

Patrick Troughton - A kind of bumbler, a bit cowardly at times, but with a certain charm and wit. War Games was probably the best "final" show of any incarnation of the Doctor.

Peter Davidson - A bit more serious and less fopish than Tom Baker. I didn't care for most of his companions though. Tegan was mucho annoying. Adric's final episode was quite touching the first time I watched it. Some good stuff during his run.

The rest I didn't see much of or didn't like. I did see several shows of the Colin Baker run and I didnt' like his version very much. I felt he was trying to be a crazier Tom Baker at times, but it's been a long time since I saw one of his episodes. Sylvester McCoy' stuff wan't played on our PBS very much, it would mainly do a cycle of Some #2 eps, a lot of episodes from Docs 3-4-5, then they did some of #6 before going back to the beginning again. I never really saw any of Hartnell's shows or even saw the TV movie with McGann.

The new guy is fine in the first two shows so far, too bad he's already quit.

Dr Who was one of the THE definitive shows of my childhood. I watched for the first time a Tom Baker sequence, The Ark in Space i think. That's still one of my favs even until this day. For a kid it is intensely creepy, mysterious, and the campy effects looked great!

What? Already quit? Why? I didn't see it but that seems pretty sudden for a budding TV career.

Apparently he was worried about being typecast as the Doctor. So he's gone after this season and a new actor will take over in the 10th regeneration. Sad really, but I think the actor was in British TV & movies before this and didnt' want to get tied down to just sci-fi.

Before anyone generalizes, I'll say that I've seen episodes of ALL the doctors, except for Colin Baker and Chris Eccleston.

Tom Baker was my first Doctor, and still the best, by far - he did hold the role the longest, and he did popularize it, building on Jon Pertwee's success and maintaining it through that combination of Sage and Rogue. :) I used to have all eight seasons on VHS before having to throw some away due to age. By the way, the first exposure to most of us in the U.S. I think was through reruns of Tom Baker, so yeah, we saw him before the rest.

Second would be Sylvester McCoy, because he reminds me vaguely of Baker's doctor, the smile and disarming good nature - but I think they may have wrote him with a bit more scruples than Baker's doctor.

Third, Jon Pertwee, mainly because Pertwee's mannerisms and looks (and the Doctor's personal sacrifices for earth in those seasons) made him the most "noble" of all the doctors to date.

From the bottom of the TARDIS:

Peter Davison - just unfriendly (as far the the scripting went), then personally, he seemed more affable than other doctors.
Troughton, Hartnell, McGann - not approachable to me - I couldn't care about any of them, Hartnell especially being so grandfatherly - and McGann doesn't even really count as a Doctor, IMHO (though he's in the timeline).

One last thing about Tom Baker - maybe it was the scripting, or maybe the actor, but he just didn't handle emotions well. When someone left the crew, or someone died, he just displayed what would be considered the "wrong" emotions for it. He was good at happy or dismayed, but "sad" and "wistful" just didn't work for him.

I thought that was part of the character. Tom Bakers Doctor was reemphasizing the 'Alieness' of the Doctor (just as Pertwee had emphasized his humanity). The Doctor we learn is one of the most powerful Galifreyans in the universe so yeah he might have a soft spot for humans but he's not going to get all cut up about one of them dying or leaving the crew (no more than a farmer and his dog anyway)
