Feat for Quikened Item Ability

Bob the Reaver

First Post
I have a player that wants to use his helmets spell (scorching ray; unlimited use) ability as a quikened action. He spotted the quiken spell like ability feat in the monster manual and asked if he could have something similar. Being a very lazy (and none to bright) GM I was hoping one of the fine people here at the EN world boards could help me out with a homebrew feat.

While you have your lids screwed on how about a little help with another problem.

I generally run the divine characters in my campaign as spontaneous spell users, like Unearthed Arcana presented. However they did not include the Ranger/paladin/other classes in the discussion. So my question is how many spells should a spontaneous ranger/paladin know. At first level, second level etc. Should it be comparable to the sorrcers list of known spells per level (2 first lvl spells known at first caster level)? I hope thats not to confusing of a question.

Thanks!

Assuming I had already allowed a helmet that produced a Scorching Ray effect at will, I still wouldn't allow a feat to quicken the ability. It simply isn't an ability of the PC, but rather of the helm. So if the PC wanted to be able to fire off a quickened Scorching Ray every round, he'd have to upgrade his helmet from Helm of Unlimited Scorching Rays to Helm of Unlimited Quickened Scorching Rays.

Assuming you used the guidelines in the DMG to price the original Helm of Unlimited Scorching Rays, you could find the price to upgrade by subtracting the original price from the new cost of the Helm of Unlimited Quickened Scorching Rays, which would be the same formula as the original, substituting the 2nd-level Scorching Ray with the 6th-level Quickened Scorching Ray.

I agree with the Lord here. Activating a magic item does take time on the weilder.

I suggest you make it quasi-intelligent, so that it may activate itself.

Much like the Quicken spell like ability in the MM I would only allow the Quicken Item ability usable a number of times per day. Like 3, maybe once. And I tried to include a cost for using the Helm of Unlimited Scorchiong Rays quickened but only three times a day, alas it was way to expensive. As I write this post I reliaze that I did not include a cost multipler for the Helm seeing as how it uses an Instantaeous spell an unlimited number of times a day. This may put the helm out of the reach of the 11th level player. I will look into it to see if the feat is needed at all.

Any idea how many spells a Paladin or Ranger should know if they are spontaneous divine casters?
