Fellow PC with an unfortunate name

...Thomas Longfellow...
You could go all-in and make it "John Thomas Longfellow". Or just call the PC "Dickens".

Steely Dan.
Or the more literary version: Steely Dan the 3rd.

Big McLargehuge? [/mst3k]
Always a classic.

Basically, there are two ways to handle situations like these. You can have a spot of fun with it, or try to tell a fellow player what to do. I wonder which approach has the greatest chance for a positive outcome...

Call him Harold the Hunter. Totally inoffensive to anybody who doesn't know the reference.
Wait is that a poem reference? (dies quick Internet search) By E Cooke?

Steely Dan.
Dr John?

Oh I forgot to mention he wields a spiked chain. Hmm, any snakey euphemisms for that?

I did a double take when he said his PC name, looked at the DM who nodded with a sheepish smile "yep, I know." Bit my tongue and tried to swallow the name. Didn't even make a Life of Brian joke! Now it's time for some fun (possibly at his expense), but don't worry I won't be too hard-on him!

And the homoerotic subtext of this thread is... wow!
