About my previous question about whether or not they reused the art meant for the MM2 for monsters that didn't make it. Did they use these images...

Yes for the zodar, ulgurstara, tunnel terror, spriggan, spore at and the sea drake. So yes to all of them!!!

What about the Half-Illithid template?
To which type of creatures can it be applied?
Does it make the creature an Illithid?

It can be applied to "any humanoid other than a human"... it doesn't become and illitid (it's not a PrC or progressive class or anything), it produces a hybrid with illithid characteristics like mind blast, and extraction and soem psionics (depending on HD). Pretty cool...

a few things i've noticed:

the clip art style illos that bare no relation to the monster they're next to are real lame.
the rilmani are listed as ousiders in their entry, but in the monsters by type section they are listed as fey.
Most of the monsters are amazingly useful for my game: far realm stuff, fiends up the wazoo, several new fey and shadow creatures. all good.

Ray asked this in another thread, but cross posting here for completeness...

Okiday - How about the Blood Hawk? Is it an animal or a magical beast? (beasts have been removed for 3.5, yes?) Does it have a blood drain attack or something similar, or is it just a nasty eagle?

magical beast with wounding (the ability that causes 1 hp damage every round after the initial attack). Straight beasts are gone i believe, but the book doesn't actually say that. it says refer to the MM for types other than those that are changed in the book. There are no new beasts in the book tho.

Just a question about the Wendigo. What special abilities does it have? If I recall correctly, the Wendigo personified cannibalism (Is this correct, or is this Hollywood?). Does the FF Wendigo have anything to do with cannibalism?

In Ojibwe myth, the Wendigo was a type of Manitou (spirit) that possessed individuals who exhibited gluttony (food, material goods, etc). The possessed individuals hunger increased, and each time it ate, it grew larger and its hunger grew again. The Wendigo was particular in that it sought out those who had tasted human flesh, even in order to survive (there are several tales of hunters coming across a survivor of a lost hunting band, with the survivor possessed by a Wendigo after subsisting on the flesh of his companions).

Thought I might make some comments too after reading through my copy. From what I have seen so far it is an improvement over MM2 and I like some of the inclusions, but I wish they had added more "3.5 enhancements" of course.

Some things I have seen (might be been mentioned somewhere else but I have not found it mentioned).

Undead/Outsiders don't seem to get Level Adjustments, but any other biped creatures with arms does unless the supposed ECL is above 20.

I like the suggested spell lists for spellcasters but it would of been good to go the extra step and add tactics as well.

Canomorph got me confused, okay they seem to be fiendish lycanthropes and they have monster samples of each type
but where are the templates.
Then I realised there arent any. They just cover the varieties for Hell Hound, Shadow Mastiff and Vorr.
They have level adjustments which conflicts with what I already said. ;-)

Century Worm is CR19, with a swallow whole attack(grapple +54) which will inflict 2d6+9 acid AND 1d8 Con damage very round (Fort DC: 38 to resist).
I don't think so...

I like the comments after some monsters (eg. if you are in Forgotten Realms, if you are playing Oriental Adventures...)

A black Ethergaunt is SO not ECL 20.

I like the choices in spell-like abilities with the Half-Fey, this is should be used more, hopefully we see this in 3.5 with Half-Celestial and Fiend.

Half-Illithid is ok and contains no surprises. Did not inspire my in the least. A bit of a shame, I hoped for more, it is just a rehash of the Mind Flayer, stripped back to a template and slightly crippled.

Half-Troll is weird. It can be applied to Dragons.
Am I a Half-Black Dragon Troll, or a Half-Troll Black Dragon???
I also don't understand how a hill giant breeding with a Troll is even stronger than either Troll or Hill Giant.
(Would have Str 31, Dex 10, Con 25).

Imps have their own section which makes me wonder whether imp will be separated from the Devil entry in MM 3.5.

I could also say I got my money's worth out of this book for the Shadar-Kai. These are what I will base for Unseelie Fae on from now on. I love the Shadow Curse!

Swarm is great, this what I should of done with Vermin Host in CC2.

The Appendixes are a great idea, great to see more than just monster stats. I hope WotC include extra stuff like that in MM 3.5.

Arawyn

Abyssal Ghoul and Blood fiend?

Heya Olive --

What can you tell me about the Abyssal Ghoul and the Blood fiend?

Are they outsiders or undead? Do they have any subtypes?

If they're outsiders do they have Undead traits? Are they turnable?

If they're undead, do they have tanar'ri traits?

Inquiring minds (namely mine) want to know ;)
