Fighter Bonus Feat

I have an issue with the Fighter being limited to three trained skills in 4e, especially when coupled with the rather limited nature of their class skills. This often leaves the Fighter with little to do to help the party in non-combat situations, and as "Defender" is really the least "sexy" of the Roles I don't see what, if anything this could be balancing (nor do I agree with balancing combat ability with skills, anyway...)

My first thought was to give the Fighter an extra skill, and not to limit that skill to the class list. Which, I noticed, was the same the feat Skill Training...

So, my next thought was to simply give the Fighter an unrestricted bonus feat. I think I may be missing my own point here, since I'm now compensating for the skill deficiency with a non-skill bonus (unless the Fighter takes Skill Training or Skill Focus, of course). I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be too unbalancing; at least none of my other players seem to mind giving the Fighter a bit of a boost...

Any thoughts?

In the three games I'm in, the two other DM's and myself have house-ruled that skills work like so: You must take the skill "named" in the skill list (ex. Clerics must take Religion, Rangers must take Dungeoneering or Nature). The rest are chosen from the entire list of skills--no class skill lists exist--to prevent pidgeon-holing. Almost everyone so far has taken Perception or Insight, but the rest of their skills are used to fluff up their character roleplaying-wise. The players love it, and it has no impact on gameplay.
