Fighting the Gray Tide (Miniature Painting)

So on to something miniatures related. On occasion, I do like to purchase miniatures for the express purpose of painting them and giving to a friend. Each year, I give all my players a painted miniature. The crab man I recently painted was purchased for a player of mine who every so often makes a crab people joke. I saw the miniature at the swap, it was only $1, and I simply couldn't resist the urge to buy it.

But sometimes I'm so happy with the paint job I have a hard time letting go. I painted a pair of mermaids last year I was particularly proud of, I didn't even intend on giving them away when purchased, but one went to niece, and the other, the topless one, went to a player. Overall I do enjoy giving miniatures away. It saves me from having to find a place for them at home and it makes other people happy. But given the time investment and the uncertainty in repeating any success, it's tough to get rid of them.

Anyone tried this? I'd love to get some more in-depth feedback. I'm interestd in how long the pens last, how well they keep their tip through repeated uses, and whether you can blend the colours easily. They seem kind of gimmicky to me, but I'd love to be wrong.

I'm thinking they might be one of the niche tools that are great for some specific tasks. I've never tried them though.

Another Reaper miniature. It's supposed to be a snapping turtle but I know an alligator snapping turtle when I see one. I've made an attempt to make it appear dirty by using some weathering powders, but, well, it didn't turn out how I wanted. But then I'm not entirely disappointed either.

I have never seen a clean alligator snapping turtle in the wild. Even fully submerged they're dirty.

A lot of times, a cloak will give you an opportunity to paint something interesting.

I've seen some truly sick freehand on cloaks over the years...
