Fighting the Gray Tide (Miniature Painting)

You might be able to find templates with symbols you can use. I use a Halloween themed template for the spider. And the templates are cheap.

Yeah, they're definitely out there, I've seen people using them before - I'd check the nail supply companies' websites or similar places, they'll probably have a wider selection. Or maybe goth makeup/gear sites for skulls and stuff. I've also seen dedicated sci-fi stuff.

I seem to recall several years ago, somebody did a KS for some not-Battletech details, although I don't remember if they were templates or decals.

Working on a proof of concept. I am pretty unhappy with the glowing effect. I think using red first was a mistake. I’m going to cover th entire area with a smoky color and try again with a thinned oil of white and then glaze on orange.

Scales are looking okay, but I need to figure out a light wash that will darken the shadows without dulling the luster too much.

Man, glow effect is so hard some times.

I’ve had to accept I’m old.

This….monstrosity on my head is supposed to help me see small details.

They helped put some flesh, something like eyes, and clean up the hood.

This is Gauth, a Reaper Bones model from one of their kick starters. While I’m sure it wasn’t priced to high originally, I bought it for $10 at a swap, it’s not terrible useful for gaming. Look at its base and then the wings. It just tipped over and fell off the table as I was typing this.

This is a problem with a some of the larger Bomes models from the early days. The bases were sometimes nonexistent or warped beyond usefulness. I don’t have strong feelings about this model as it was bought for the expressed purpose of testing new ideas. But I think I’ve gotten what I want, so I’m done. I might keep it around for further testing.

I tried again. Still not great.

I have found that so far the best results I've gotten from glow is to work backwards. That is, normally you do dark base and drybrush highlights on progressively lighter. But when doing glow, I do brightest first (deepest recesses) and drybrush gradually darker, with each new darker color radiating outwards more and skipping the center.

Oh yes, I was really disappointed at how many bones figures, especially large ones, had warped or unusable bases. I had to glue Cthuhlu onto an old CD case for a base lol. And it still leans bad
