If you play illusionist, I suggest you have a chat with the DM to make sure you are on the same page with respect to what illusions are and are not capable of. That could save a lot of grief later on.

What level are you playing to? If high level, note that druids have to fight to get to achieve (and keep!) levels 12, 13 and 14.

What stat generation system are you using? If you have high enough attributes you could try a human character with two classes (I always thought an Assassin 13/Illusionist X would be interesting).

Finally: Are you going to be using the Psionics rules?

Find out how character generation's being done, first. If you're not allowed to rearrange the stats, you'll have fewer choice options. "Play it as it lays" means you've got to really think as a group to cover the bases.

Heh - you named the one class out of all of them that I have NO interest in playing!

We're all getting together at a bar this Wednesday to chat over a beer or two and figure out who's playing what. I think I'm down to either an illusionist or a druid - the druid would be more surviveable, but the illusionist would be a fun challenge. Plus, I think I want to play an illusionist as a kind of foppish dandy who's quite considered about appearances, whether real or magical. Damn, this is a tough choice! At least I know I definitely want human, anyway.

1E Bard= fighter, then thief, then modified druid. Takes a long time, especially if you max levels in each class, but worth the time invested.

The 1E ranger is also classic as it predates the Drizzt facination with dual wielding weapons (which I never understood in the first place).

the 2e Ranger wasn't given duel wielding because of Driz'zt. It was because there was demand pre-dating Driz'zt for a duel wielding character. Driz'zt was a by the core ranger and Drow, which meant he could duel wield without penalties as a drow.

Congrats! Be sure to drop by Knights n Knaves and Dragonsfoot to discuss your AD&D adventures!

Also, are you, by chance, playing in Greyhawk? :D

I've wondered what it would be like to go back to 1E after having played thru 2E and 3.X. I wonder how much my gaming sensibilities have changed since then, and if I'd be happy with the options available in 1E. Not that 3.X is perfect by any means, but the game sure has evolved a LOT since it started (no edition wars please - just stating a fairly common observation).

Ohhh, I don't know what character to play...

I really think you should go with a Sorcerer. I'm a big fan of the class, personally.

Oh... wait.

*ducks*

Or, oooh, oooh, I know. How about a Dwarven Paladin. Er, no? Um, Human Cleric/Mage/Mystic Theurge?

Ok, I'll stop.
