Misty step bonus action + movement does mean that the wizard will be able to stay out range relatively easily. That also leaves the Action to use offense. But a dex fighter has a better chance of going first because of a good initiative modifier than a STR version. He can also invest in his 3rd NAD defense more freely. So with a shield on top of a DEX bonus to armor, you can easily get to 18 AC in medium armor while having very solid NADs to better protected yourself against the onslaught of spells the wizard would cast. So to recap:

Higher if not equal initiative between the two classes if the wizard invests in DEX (he should) and the fighter is DEX primary (he should be)

Fighter defenses are solid all around under those circumstances while the Wizard has only decent CON and AC (Ac being the most important) and must compensate for this via spells like Shield or Mage Armor (which would have to be pre-emptively cast to be valuable since losing the action to cast it in combat would suck)

Offense wise, the fighter is a constant and steady stream of attacks as is expected of any martial class. The wizard has the ability to inflict statuses on a hit with good damage output and can keep up with the fighter via cantrips once slots run out. However as shown above, the fighter will most likely have an edge defense wise overall.

Movement wise the wizard has the edge if he has misty step to use a bonus action to get out of dodge, however once that runs out. All the fighter has to do is be in melee for the wizard to get screwed. Either you disengage and miss out on offense, or you have disadvange on your ranged spell or you take an OA.. none of those are very interesting imo.

Honestly, it depends highly on the level of the participants. If we're talking two level 20 characters here, then it's hard to not put the Wizard in front. Cast a 9th level spell like Shapechange? Hard to fight through a CR 20 Dragon and then have to still deal with a wizard that can cast Shield and Misty Step at will, with a full progression of spell slots level 8 and lower. Hell, cast Wish using Simulacrum, and make a carbon copy of the fighter and have him fight himself. See how he likes that!

Can you tell which one I voted for?

I think in the back of everyone's mind despite what class you WANTED to see here, you knew it would be these two and despite that I would love for the fighter to win, and voted for him, we all know the wizard is going to win...

Everyone knows that in a fight, the wizard wins, on so many levels. (Skeleton armies, summoned minions, Meteor Swarm, or even just Blink + Hold Person.) And I do enjoy playing wizards.

But the fighter still gets my vote here, because I would enjoy playing a fighter in a solo campaign as much or more than playing a wizard, partly because the wizard is too obviously "easy mode."

I voted wizard, simply because I couldn't pick both.

I love a fighter, but I never liked how DnD handles magic-using fighters. If I want a fighter with a sword that bursts into flames as a result of their aura, I don't want to pump so much into intelligence to get the spellcasting ability.
