First GenCon thread of 2004

I, and my posse of SWRPGNetwork crew members and close friends, will be returning in force for GenCon. I know, you can all start celebrating.

All kidding aside, I'm very excited about this year's possibilities. d20 Future will probably launch at the show if I had my guess about it, so it'll be neat to see how people like it first-hand. I'm not going to make the same mistake of running 4 games like I did last year; it was a lot more work than I'd planned, I missed seminars, and everyone involved didn't get their money's worth out of me.

And we'll see if the ENnie-shattering story is still making the rounds...

Darn it - right in football season - that probably counts me out. Maybe I can sneak over there Sunday...

Not a conflict most people deal with I know ;)

Has anyone ever been a GenCon Volunteer? What is involved, and is it worth it?
I was a volunteer last year at GenCon. It was a good experience, but it does tend to cut down the enjoyment. I worked 4 hours each day (7-11) and got in for free.

PROS
Free admission (it took about 8 weeks to get my refund)
Good parking (since I got there before 7am each day)
Wasn't too overwhelmed by the scope of GenCon
Got free T-shirts

CONS
Had to get up earlier than when I went to work
Was too tired to stay there past 5pm any given day (No live-reading KoDT for me!)
Lost 3 hours of gaming time (I hadn't signed up for any games, though)

I would volunteer again, but I don't think I will this year because I want to do some gaming. I missed out on a lot of fun, but part of that was because I didn't know what to expect. Events like that are hit and miss with me due to the enormous crowds (but GenCon was definitely a HIT!)

Cool, looks like a standard Hold 'Em tournament. Will chips be used in place of dice during actual play? Seems like having a couple hundred dice in front of you is a recipe for disaster...

Also, is this a scheduled event? I've never signed up for one in the past, but I don't want to miss this one.

I've thought hard about it, and despite my desire to see players shoving massive piles of dice around, I think I'm going to have to use chips. This is especially necessary when the the blinds get huge after a couple of hours of play. At that point you just rechip (increase the value of each chip by a convenient factor).

This should be in the pre-reg guide. I submitted the event Monday. If it works well, I thought about running a larger tourney for charity the following year.

This will be probably the first year since GenCon started in the UK I won't be attending, because as far as I'm aware its still cancelled. I've heard rumours that someone was going to give it a go but as yet seen nothing offical. :(

So, anyone here running a game this year? Event submissions is open: http://www.gencon.com/displayindy.aspx?file=indy-event-submissions

Yep, and we've more than doubled our number of GMs, so we'll be running a slew of games (30+ 4hr games). However, they aren't in the system yet, 'cause i'm waiting to hear back from one GM (should be Tues/Wed) before i can finalize the schedule. But by friday, you should be able to register for our games--just look for The Impossible Dream in the sponsor/GM field. [I actually tried mightily to have all the events submitted before registration started, but there were lost emails, and then a couple of GMs have had delays in finding out their own schedules. Maybe next year.]
