First GenCon thread of 2004

I'll be there this year. I don't plan to play in many events though. I'm probably going to try to get involved in mostly pickup games, and going to seminars until I get a few years of Gencon experience under my belt. This will be the first convention I've ever been to, and I'm more than a little anxious.
Last year was my 1st GenCon, and as far as events go, I'd suggest limiting yourself to one preregestered game per day. I signed myself up for 2 each day, then ended up dropping a bunch because I wanted to go to seminars that conflicted with the games. Plus, there are PLENTY of pickup games going on. Even if you don't sign up for any games, there is so much going on at any given time, you'll never have trouble finding something to do. But if you see something that you just have to play, by all means sign up!

Las year was my first GenCon, and I'd like to second his advice.

By far, the most fun I had was playing in pick-up and non-event, but still scheduled (through ENWorld folks) games.

Pre-reg for waht you want but remember there are a lot of pick-up games and this is the power of the generic ticket, it does not save you a spot but it does allow flexability.

Plan well - I have seen it year after year, people will pick the first game they see in the first slot. Look before leaping, check to see if the game is not in another slot and plan out your days, building a time line of what you have scheduled. Oh, don't foget to have a plan B, look at the events and see if there is something else going on that you would be interested in seeing or playing.

Down time - schedule it, this is time to check out the dealer room, eat, or just do a pickup game.
