First Reaper, now Deadlands!

There are more examples out already, AT-43 and soon Confrontation (from what I hear) by Rackham, and Battlefield Evolution by Mongoose.

8 minis for $30, though, so a tad more expensive than D&D Minis, and probably never with quite the same variety.

Nobody has ever said it is impossible to sell prepainted minis. Just to sell a large range of non-randomized minis cheap. And, importantly for WotC, in so few store items to make them easy for any store to carry.

Well, right now there isn't much to talk about. The only cast we've seen is of a hangin' judge. Everything else is just smoke right now. But people are talking about it, and I know Shane Hensley is excited. In a recent interview, he stated that his dream would be to put out a set of prepainted plastic minis for each savage setting, much like they do with their figure flats.

They've got a preview of two sculpts... The Huckster and The Mad Scientist

They look nice.

Like Kunimatyu, I've got plans in the future for a True20 Wild West game... I'd love to have a whole bunch of these.

Yeah, I never believed WOTC's claims about it not being profitable. I only believed it wasn't Uber profitable enough for Hasbro.

Its plenty profitable for companies like Reaper and Pinnacle. They aren't trying to have a billion dollars in profits every year.
No sir you are all kinds of wrong.

Reaper is an industry leader in the miniatures business. This means that their profits exceed that of WotC on the miniatures end.

And if you read the announcement, you will see that this is quite a different business model than Reaper has for nonrandom, prepainted minis. They are talking about multiple figures with "terrain, unit cards and more". You cannot buy them individually or even without frills.

When Reaper or Games Workshop sell boxes of 5 miniature figures, you can expect to pay $25-$30 for them. They are unpainted with no terrain or cards or dice or Cracker Jack prizes. For less figures than WotC sells in a random pack, I would expect the Deadlands sets to go for around $30. And since you're getting 5 figures in that package, you could be paying that much for only one or two that you actually want. It's a step up from random, twice as much, for half as many figures.

I'd seen this announcement on the Pinnacle site, and there is a lot of excitement on their boards too. From what I've seen, the sculpts are awesome- much better than the D&D minis, and Shane is a stickler for getting what he wants- I trust his judgement. I never cared much for th D&D minis- I'd pick up 3 or 4 figures out of each set for things I can't get in metal, but I'd buy bazillions of Deadlands minis, despite my preference for painting minis myself. Plus the non-random nature is a big bonus to me- I want to know what I'm getting rather that indulge in the collectible market. 5 minis for $20 would be worth it to me, but who am I kidding- I'd pay almost anything for them. I LOVE Deadlands- its my favorite RPG of all time.
