D&D 3E/3.5 Fixing 3.5 full casters

Fighters are self-sufficient and can last many encounters without running out of resources; they can fight bare-handed if necessary.

I would say if a fighter runs out of HP, he can cast spells, but that would seem moot.

EDIT: Sadly, not everyone adventures in a party. It is good to know that many casters are able to fall back on the support of their allies when they are not able to fend for themselves though.

I believe you can really benefit from my Strain & Tolerance approach.

All I have to say is buy/craft wands, scroll, staffs and 'boom' you have a more lasting caster.
IMO: If you have a good DM he won't allow your fighter to run around in a full-plate swinging a great sword all day cause there are no rules for combat fatigue.

Ragman, as you point out, there are no rules that penalise a fighter for running around in platemail all day and swinging his great sword. It stretches believability somewhat, but you are quite right, the rules as written do allow the fighter to be at peak capacity throughout the whole day. He's somewhat like a line that runs horizontally, if you can imagine a graph of power over time, as the loss of hitpoints doesn't actually affect his attack rolls.

Mages, on the other hand, would have a line that is somewhat diagonal, with a peak at the beginning of the day and sliding down to the right hand side as they used up their limited resources. Of course, the best way to play a mage is to not use all of your resources and get some safe rest to get them back. Mages are like artillery: big bang for your buck but you got to keep that supply of artillery shells coming for them to stay effective. Every class is different, of course.
