Flumphs got the shaft!

"Jeff: At the very start of the project, we built a master list from previous sources as well as ideas we wanted to cover. Then Rich Redman, Creative Director Rich Baker, and I hacked it down to a manageable level. Among those left out: no saurials (unique to Forgotten Realms), no giff (gunpowder use is only an option in the new D&D), and no flumphs. (Too silly -- hey, I got outvoted!)

Rich: Yeah, no flumphs!

Ed: I guess I'm the odd man out. I would like flumphs but only augmented with templates, like a half-fiend flumph ghost?"

Yeah, I know flumphs are silly. But so are all those amorphous blobs, multiheaded monsters, beholder variants, gibbering-mouther-types, and so on and so on. So why not just do stats for the dadgum flumph already? It was always one of the more alien creatures in D&D.

Yeah, I know flumphs for 3e are or will be available elsewhere (hey Scott!).

WHAT?!?!?

That's horrible.

One thing about the Flumphs, there were absolutely no "what's the worst monster" debates during 2e. Everyone knew exactly where to look.

BRING BACK THE FLUMPH!

While I am heartened to realize that the flumph will be returning via the Tome of Horrors, I worked my own bit of "rebuilding from the ground up", on the beastie.

My 3e uphlum is a LG, levitating, white, jellyfish-like...well, you get the idea. :D A relative of both the ilithid (earth) and aboleth (water), the uphlum (air) "reproduces" in much the same manner as the ilithid (per the 2e supplement).

While the uphlum cannot frequent the undersea portions of the Pinnacles of Azor'alq, they can float around the 1,000' of each spire that rises upward from the surface.

aeo, you do know about Necromancer's "Tome of Horrors" by now don't you? :)

Yep, see my post, above :D

Tome of Horrors, MM2, and BoVD will round out my D&D purchases, this year, assuming more aquatic supplements aren't announced.

cool, you must have posted that while i myself was reading and typing. ;) hope you enjoy it; for now at least, you can see it on the creature catalog, and it will be in print form in a few months. :)

FLUMP-A-LUMPA!
