Flying off the shelves!

First off, the store you described sounds like it sucks. I've never understood a retailer who turns down special orders or isn't willing to take a deposit to hold books. That's stupid. Heck, for people I know I'll hold books without deposits as long as it isn't outrageously expensive.

All of my local FLGS suck. They are rude to customers, never special order and don't even come to the register when I am ready to purchase. I tried to run a demo of Lejendary Adventure at one locally and the manager screwed me over and scheduled me for the same day as a tweenie's Magic Card game...I was not happy. If TalonComics comes to SE PA then I'll start buying from FLGS again, but until then...never.

I'm a die-hard laissez-faire capitalist from the von Mises and Hayek school, but I'll still be buying the 3.5 books from my FLGS, The Compleat Strategist right here in NYC.

Sure, they're cheaper online, but I won't get as much from amazon.com: I'll just get the books. From The Strategist, I get some conversation with other gamers in the store, a chance to hold and feel and see every single page of other products I might want, and best of all that sense of wonder that I still get when I walk into The Strategist and see everything from trading-card games stacked ten feet high to TSR products from 1983 still in the original shrink wrap, waiting for a loving home.

I wish they'd put a couch in there. With a fridge. Not that there's any room; the aisles are about two feet wide and when they vacuum you have to walk down about thirty feet before you can step out of their way. But I love it in there, and that's why they're getting my 3.5 business.
