Follow the Leader

First Post
After weeks of muddling around and no one really wanting to step up into a leadership roll in my group's party, I had a divine general designate one of the characters as the spokesperson and leader for the party. "Out of game" I based my decision on the character whom I felt had the most 3.5 experience and whom has had some of the best ideas but no one has listened to him. His character also is sort of with the party to (find new riches-- generic background storyline) so I figured it would give him something meaty to play with as the irresponsible guy whom now finds himself a leader.

After game 3 of the party members, including him, thanked me for including it iin the storyline. One member, and his wife also in the game, was a bit miffed that Omaro (the npc) didn't appoint him, considering he once led a regiment of his town guards. My ingame reason is that his wife is sometimes disruptive and I'm not sure how long she'll stay plus neither have an extensive amount of experience with 3.x and his character is often very quiet (solemn warforged fighter). I told him that there was a hidden storyline that I was not at liberty to reveal, but that his destiny was elsewhere. HE seemed to buy it for the moment.

Has anyone ever "appointed or wrote in " a party leader. Was it at the beginning of the campaign or during the campaign. How did you handle it and how did you decide whom should "be in charge.

Actually, unless the party decides on officially having a leader, I don't write them in. What I do is write in a plot hook for 1 or 2 of the characters for whatever the current adventure is. This usually motivates that/those players enough to "push" the adventure onwards.

I'm going to use the fact that IMC one of the players wants to become a barbarian warchief, to push him towards a more commanding role.

Fortunately, the player who actually "is" the leader right now (a sorceror) is quite content to play the role of sage advisor (if you consider blowing up everyhting in your path sage advice :p ).
