Demon God's Fane
It's interesting that this has come up, simply because you will find that the finished cover of Demon God's Fane has been altered to reduce the cheesecake. (You can see it on the front page of my site montecook.com.)
I don't blast others for cheesecake, but I personally don't like it on my products. I like illustrations to be "fantasy realistic" and for the most part, as others have pointed out, fighting in a thong or with lots of cleavage showing, isn't always realistic (I suppose sometimes it could be).
The process we have with S&S is ongoing. They and their artists are getting to know what we at Malhavoc like, but it takes some time. You'll notice that there's no cheesecake on any Malhavoc electronic release (I think the woman on the electronic cover of Book of Eldritch Might II is cool and attractive without a hint of cheesecake--you can check that out at montecook.com as well.) You'll also notice that the S&S cover for If Thoughts Could Kill, by the very talented Kieran Yanner, also shows a tastefully depicted woman--and personally I think that cover rocks.
For whatever it's worth. Ultimately, it's sort of a "to each his or her own" sort of issue. I certainly have no intention of disparaging talented artists or another company's choice of marketing technique. I just think it's interesting that an illustration that we've worked hard to change is being used as an example of exactly what we were trying to avoid. Oh well.
