The Riven Tower

Originally created as a small fort set deep within a crevice in one of the small mountains/hills along the border river, The Riven Tower is unique in that it's never been heard about much or even considered anything other than a slightly oddity to the small farming thorp called Riven River. But since 104 AV, a new owner has come into play and with it, many subtle changes. After a Vengaurak attack nearly decimiated the thorp, a small band of adventurers called the Broken Collars helped to rebuild and restore the town to a much better state. All but one of the adventures moved on. A half elven magess by the name of Killanni Starmoon, (apparently a former resident of Termana but brought over by raiders/slavers in Virduk's Promise), decided to investigate the small, largely abandoned fort. There she stayed, apparently using only her magic and skills in woodslore to cleanse the fort of it's former occupants, some coal goblins. After a time, two charduni appeared in town. Though the locals had little dealings with such dwarves, they were wary enough not to attack them on sight, fearful they might bring more of their kind. It was then that the magess appeared again and proclaimed to all that these charduni were to be her assistants in building a new tower, though it would be deep underground. The inhabitants only nodded and though some mutter ill tides about such creatures, few cared. Most remembered that Killanni had been one of the adventurers to help rebuild their village. After a time, rumors abounded about the place. Some claim that Killanni was searching for a way to bring back the nameless god of elven parents line. Some claimed she was merely trying to build a new conclave of mages, for certainly there have been a few of arcane talent that have passed through, looking for the Riven Tower. Most are treated well, out of deference to Killanni. In any case, no one is quite sure what it all means. What is certain is that as long as nothing bad happens in their thorp, they are content. So far...

The Greenwood Scythe Circle

While there are numerous tales of creatures both foul and fair in the Waring Wood, there is also one of the druid circle that lives deep in heart of the wood. There they stand watch over an artifact of great power, the scythe of Celeress. Formerly just an ordinary magic weapon, Denev, in memory of her faithful servant, imbued the scythe with much of her earthly might, forever making a weapon against the titanspawn, as well as means of healing the land. Many druids since the Divine War have used it, but after the return of the Incarnates, the druid Malan decided to use the weapon in a different fashion. Taking it deep into the wood, he planted it into the ground. There, it grew, turning into a powerful looking ash and yet still keeping the keen and powerful blade, which now was slightly covered by leaves and thick boughs. A circle then was made, carved out of land's stones and touched by the power of the tree. Each stone had carved on it, symbols of many animals. Six were made and thus six were drawn, the wolf, the bear, the owl, the hawk, the deer and the boar. There the circle remains, dedicated to rebuilding and balancing the wood's nature order. While they are not at war, they do gently remind the locals of the need to conserve and rebuild, as well as allow the wood to grow back. The Hedradan monks don't take too kindly to this philosophy, seeing as an affront to their ideal of order. The druids however have been very calm and pleasant. They offer healing to those that need it, and council those in need of the Earth Mother's guidance. Some claim that while they are peaceful, they will fight. No recorded occurance has been substanitated, but there are rumors that if the wood is attack, the Ashscythe itself will fight to protect the land and it's charges. So far it's mostly rumors...for now.

Re: scarred lands

Predominatly apprenticeship in my world. Wizards aren't exactly solid by themselves, they benift more than other groups from having researchers, other spell casters, etc.

I never really bought the you-go-to-college-and-now-you-can-cast-spells thing. Even then I imagine smaller studios like a conservatory of music, one instructor, a few students who focus on learning from the master and then maybe a few survey courses.
Don't mean to be dismissive.... just think that the one-on-one thing is most likely.

NIght:
There was a bizaar spell selection on the WotC board one day.... all fire magic from a fire wizard. Good stuff. The weirdest part was where the book was found though.... in an invisible tower in the middle of their town...
don't remember the whole thing it was kind of a one off, one of the WotC staffers or playtesters worked it up & posted it. Maybe that's what you're looking for?

scarred lands

Good stuff! I always liked the idea of adventurers retireing to a small town. It helps to keep the pc's in check.

Leave it to a Druid to plant a powerfull weapon in the earth and make it grow!

Graf - I always held a slightly differnt view, yes I also feel that mages will cluster into small groups both for security but also for intelectual companionship and reaserch purposes. and most mage "schools" will be a master and his few aprentices/students,

The mage college is just a natural extension of this in an urban setting. Countries like Darakeene with a decidedly lawfull bent IMO will do what they can to control what the mages within the country are taught (esp. since most will at least for a time serve in the military) a large portion of the rest will wind up being associated with the phylactric vault which if I understand correctly you have to be inrolled in classes or be a sage of the vault to research there. Since it has the 2nd largest liburary and numourus labs its gonna be a magnet for mages and if you have to take classes then it is a college of sorts. It has always made sence to me that its better to learn from several instructers and take what you can use from each before you forge your own path. thats just my opinion.

Graff, don't worry I got it down. Riven Tower works better for me. I also don't buy much in "go to college to cast spells" I think that's something both R&R2 and the upcoming Player's guide will fix/take care of for us. (At least I hope so!)

Well only one! ;) But I'm glad you liked that one. Killianni is mostly there to build her own little stash of magic and probably do few classes (after the students pay their way here). Plus they get to find out what's in the lower levels...Perhaps a lost gold vein? Some Dweomer Crystals? Or maybe just a way of training against underground monsters? ;) You be the judge.

As for the scythe of Celeress, I figured it would be a nice way of making a druid circle as well as having something to balance out the growth in that wood.

10th. At least since the years have passed. She was only 5th before she went into the tower. It's been a little under 46 years. I imagine she's gotten some experience by then.

scarred lands

do you have her info and spell list? once we pick up another player (hopefully a mage) she could come in handy for training.

Where did you place Riven River?

Riven River lies just north of the third mountain/hill near the bend of the Border river.

I'll work up something tonight. I'll post it here when I get it done.
