Do you mean the anti-Szass Tam rebels who call themselves the Thayan Resurrection? Like Syranna from Dead in Thay and Rath Modar from Tyranny of Dragons?
Yeah, and there was also a suggestion in SCAG and elsewhere that there were less organized non-Tamian Red Wizards around Faerun, doing their thing, exploring new ways of doing stuff. Seems a likely group for PCs to be involved with, much more than Szass Tam.

Their origins were actually in the Brotherhood of Griffin Saga of novels, great books, where in the Haunted Lands trilogy Thay has a civil war between Szass Tam vs the other living Zulkirs and the none Banite religions in Thay and the Griffin Brotherhood. Tam takes Thay, the other side's survivors go into exile.

Szass Tam has supported using heroes against his enemies, including rewarding them, such as in the novel Red Magic. He's more pragmatic and less evil for evil's sake.

OK. I haven't read a D&D novel in probably close to 20 years. I only really follow the lore that's in the adventures.

Am I the only one who doesn't want good guys Red Wizard? I can get behind various competing evil factions, but please, the FR doesn't not have much in terms of nation-sized antagonists. I usually treat them as the Undeads from Warcraft or the Lotus Clan from Battle Realms, at best the Tevinter Imperium from DA on a good day.

You can work with them, they can work with you, but they still be shady, power hungry half-dead magisters.

"Good Guys" seems a string statement. "Opposed to the world conquering undead empire" doesn't exactly require goody-two shoes Heroism.
