Forked Thread: Bought Savage Worlds, what should I know about it?

I think Attributes already play a huge role, though Agility and Smarts have a lesser role since they're linked to so many skills.

Yep, maybe I have put that a bit too bluntly. They surely are important, but more in the background of the system. Little spotlight time, so to say. I prefer it, if their importance is a little more obvious and their influence a little more direct (basically only Vigor and Spirit work like that originally). Especially when it comes to skill rolls.

The original system works equally well, I just like the feel better that way (as above). :)

Though you have to spend money for these, I'd recommend the following:

- Fantasy Toolkit(s)
- Sci-Fi Toolkit(s)
- Pulp Toolkit

I didn't find the Horror one all that useful.

Also, I have a bunch of free junk on my website...

Savage Worlds should have a warning label on it that it may ruin you for other (more complicated, less fun) games. :)
Could you give more detailed praise?:uhoh: In my group SW is up against WFRP2E, which we all enjoy for our own reasons.

I would have welcomed the chance to buy those as books. But when I got to the FLGS, they had none of those :(. Seems the toolkits are pdf files, which i have not had experience purchasing.

what issues would you say made that so? I like horror gaming on par with pulpy fantasy. If redundancy with other horror gaming books is the issue I have:

  • LOTS of Call of Cthulhu BRP [mostly 5thEd.] & the CoCd20 corebook
  • Old Chill Hardcover
  • A few old Dark Conspiracy books
  • I.C.E. Nightmares of Mine

:pThanks.

Was looking at the Solomon Kane book while at the FLGS, it had a nice pulpy feel to it. It would be quite an investment, though so I have to see if the group likes SW.

Anyone links to more flavorful spell lists with the broader effects chopped up into more focused effects [bolts, walls ...etc]?

I *think* they're releasing them as books, but you'll have to check the peg site. If you're not into PDF's, then that might be a problem, but it's a lot of great suggestions, examples and more content that you don't have to build yourself in various genres.

Really, it's redundancy of both material (I have a lot of the Cthulhu stuff), and the simplicity of building stuff in SW. Once I had the Fantasy and Sci-Fi toolkits and banged around with them a bit, I didn't need anything else. I felt like I could do whatever I wanted in any other genre. I grabbed the pulp stuff just because I'm all pulpy.

The earlier comment about limitations of the types of spells is way off the mark in my opinion. The beauty of the system, in my opinion, is that Bolt can be used for _any_ "shoot a magical thing at someone" spell by the trappings. It's all trappings. You can take Bolt and call it Swarm of Flaming Magical Monkeys and add appropriate trappings (appearance). If appearance doesn't do it for you, then you can tack on effects and balance it yourself with limitations on Rank, increased power point costs, etc.

Don't be fooled by the fact that the spells look "generic." Hell, challenging your players to come up with their own trappings is half the fun. If anyone sits at my table and says "I cast Blast." they get a spellcasting penalty and general derision.

They're releasing Companions to the genres, i.e. Fantasy COmpanion, Sci-Fi Companion etc. These will be available in stores (fantasy coming in April, last I heard).

The companions are not the same as the toolkits, there is overlapping information, but I think they're supposed to supplement each other, IIRC. At least, the designer in a reply told the person to get the toolkit if he wanted to do world design etc. Here, bottom of page 2.

Ok, what extra material should I be looking at for

Savage Heresy [40kRPG]

Iron Savages [Iron Heroes] {notably varied martial edges]

Dark sun
