D&D 4E Former 4E doubter , I have high hopes now

Like a lot of people here, I tend to bitch when WoTC does something I hate.

So , I think it's time for me to say something.

I was originally a 4E doubter. I looked at the weaker 3E books, and extrapolated, and assumed the worst. I read everything posted with a critical eye. I complained on this forum.

The thing is, I am finding that I like the vast majority of what has been announced about 4E since then. The implied setting. The cosmology changes. The slaughter of numerous Forgotten Realms NPCs. The design goals of the rules mechanics.

Things are starting to look really good, in my opinion.

There are a few things I don't like. But they are drowned out by the changes I think I'll be happy about. In my opinion, the design team has the right goals, and from what I can tell, they're doing a great job of realizing them.

So I thought I'd post this, to give credit where credit is due.

I wonder how many other former doubters feel the same way?

I'm like the stock market on D and D. I've gone from utterly no, to complete gunho, to pessimism, to optimism to maybe that might work to right now where I'm probably going to wait a few months before using it.

4e needs to develop enough where I can figure out how to properly house rule it.

Dissenters are made to feel unwelcome by trolls.

To clarify for those who can't wrap their head around this:

It's not that complicated... really.

I guess this is why WotC feels the need to simplify D&D.
The above quoted comments are fairly insulting. If you say stuff like that, you should expect to be treated like a troll. Trolls do get dog-piled, and that's not a terrible thing.

If you post 4e hate in the General forum, you won't see this mentality. It's only people who troll by forum-crapping in the 4e forum who get dog-piled.

Good luck, -- N

I try to overcome by doubt about 4E but every time I nearly did it WotC posts another slew of infos where I can just shake my head at (for example this ring issue).

I've moved in the other direction of late. I wouldn't say I was a doubter, but the magic item revelations have really turned me off to the point where I'm no longer "certain" that 4E is going to be a game that's enjoyable for my group, but rather think that it might be good. A lot of things might be good.

Yeah, for me this magic item issue (especially the thing with the rings) is a big thing.
before that it was only questionable fluff changes, but now there are also questionable mechanical changes.

I'm looking at the whole thing with cautious optimism. I'm not terribly upset about the cease in production of 3.5, despite the fact that I love the game. There is plenty of 3.5 stuff out there, and I've found myself perfectly capable of developing everything I need that's not already out there.

From a business perspective, I can see where WotC needs to develop a new edition. I can respect that. I'm withholding my judgement until I actually play the game. And even then, I'll probably play a couple of times before forming a final opinion.

I'm not taking anyone's side here except my own and I'm not jumping into anyone elses argument. I just wanted to say that since the 4e announcement there has been a significant amount of animosity toward anti-4e opinions. Now there has also been animosity toward pro-4e opinions. But there is a certain fairly small group of posters that dogpiles anyone who questions whether 4e is an improvement. For all that this is one of my favorite boards it's been enough to make me consider just not posting until the 4e fervor dies down. There are times when it feels like that small group is trying to drive those more cautious or pessimistic off the site. And it raises the spectre that those of us who stick with 3e won't be welcome here after 4e arrives.

Personally I just don't like a lot of what I see out of 4e. This doesn't mean I don't like D&D, it is my favorite hobby one that I've participated in for just over 20 years now. What it does mean is that it's moving away from things which have defined it and I worry for the future of the game.

I like the OPs take on the situation. I've flip flopped a little myself, though generally felt positive.

Currently finding myself - Undecided but very interested.

Lots of little bits and pieces may look good or bad... but I've come to the conclusion I need to see how they fit together before I can judge it.

Know I'll be buying the books!

I wrote that AFTER getting dog-piled. Sorry if you feel only those who are happy with 4th edition have a right to post here but you're completely in the wrong in that regard.

Just sayin': Sometimes there's a wide disparity between what you have a right to do and what's a good idea to do.

Without making any judgement on your posts in particular, I'd say that trolling in the 4e forum certainly qualifies as something that one has the right to do but which one shouldn't do regardless.
