Giants are missing. Really, how could they have omitted giants?! I also would have like something about mindflayers. Really, centaurs aren't the most interesting of races. :( And wemics? why wemics?

I'll take a couple guesses on this.
There weren't giants, because there are probably too many giants to put in there. There wasn't enough space.
As for mind flayers, between Lords of Darkness and Savage Species, how much more could you add to the mindflayers?

On an entirely unrelated note.

Race statistics... it's rather annoying to have to pick up another book to get the stats on an Aasimar for example. The race book should be exactly that. A COMPLETE listing of races.

Also I'm asking in another thread if the Avariel +3 CR is an error.

My guesses: Giants and mind flayers are very high ECL creatures. The weakest MM giant is ECL 16 I think. Probably not popular choices for PCs. As mentioned above you can get ECL info (and even "monster as class" info on some of the giants and the mind flayer) in Savage Species.

As to why they did include some races you don't find appealing ... I guess they figured some people would want info on them.

I agree that it's kind of silly to have to refer back to the FRCS to make full use of Races of Faerun. I think with about 6 extra pages they could have fit in all of the 'race stat block' info for the FRCS races, making it a book that could truly be portable to other settings.

I don't think the book needed Kir-Lanan. I'd of liked to see, at the very least, a half-ogre, or something along the lines of Ogre.

Saurials are missing. Even though they were detailed in a back issue of Dragon, they still deserve a permanent place in a Forgotten Realms supplement product.

Giants takes too much place and have a too high ECL. Mindflayers ? Too high ECL, and not fun to play -- someone posted about his mindflayer PC and how it was uninteresting, and how gaining a level of psion or wizard wasn't at all good, while gaining a level in another class seemed silly or counterproductive (like fighter for a character that avoid all melee whatsoever, if need be by planeshifting away). Mindflayers are not for races of faerûn, but for monsters of faerûn (which, indeed, contains the alhoon).

Poor flayers, they are spread everywhere: base monster in the MM, lichs in MoF, their pet and a monster in the Psi handbook, the Elder Brain in the upcoming Underdark, and brain golems and ceremorphised creatures in the Fiend Folio.

Centaurs and wemics are much more playable.
