Free D20 Supers!

Hey guys, just to drop a note.

Mike Mearls, our friendly D20 junkie is assembling a complete, game-unto-itself WILD TALENTS OGL conversion which will be completely compatible with that Dungeons and Giant Lizards game I've been hearing so much about...

WILD TALENTS is a build-your-own superhero game, which can handle everything from four-color action to gritty "realistic" supers.

The even better news, is that it will be available for free download on the web sometime in August.

Why pay for D20 supers when you can get one of the best D20 author's work on the subject for free?

While I'm glad to hear that there will be another edition of Supers, and by Mike Mearls no less, I think it is extremely bad form to come to a publisher's boards that intend to publish a d20 Supers work to be sold and take the following attitude:

To be honest Khan, I know a handful of people in the "industry" I respect, and I've been here a long time, so I'm not too worried about my "bad form". As for insulting publishers –– there are two publishers in this "industry" and trust me, neither you nor I (nor anyone working on D20 supers) are among them –– everything else is just vanity press.

If people want to publish D20 supers for profit, let them. But it's going to be difficult, and they better do a damn good job. What people want, in the immortal words of John Tynes are "Better Products for Free." Since D20 is such a two edged sword (a ton of products are produced for it, but a good 90% of them are crap) it's about time someone started covering some ground so we can thin the herd a little. People are abusing the license by churning out crud in the hopes of some quick cash, and I'm not afraid to point it out, so why not just get as much out into the OGL as possible so people will cease trying to create a new money-making bandwagon?
By offering WILD TALENTS OGL for free, by a significant author, we remove a bit of the chaff –– you want it, you download it, and you don't have to fork over 35$ for a shoddy product to get it.
If you disagree, that's fine. But I have to ask, you're not, by any chance, working on a D20 Supers product, are you?

Wow. I don't care HOW much you think of yourself, that was out of line, Det.

Slamming people who are either just having fun or trying to get payed for a living doesn't make you honest or straight forward, it makes you a jack-ass.
Like Khan, i thought the tone and/or slam against other D20 creators was uncalled for. Especially considering you used the message boards of one of said publishers to do it. Low class.
I didn't say anything at first because it was borderline, but your response to Khan was damn rude.

Another thing. Doing what you did, in the manner you did it, in the name of Mike Mearls isn't doing Mike Mearls any favors. I'll bet money at least a handful of people just lost interest in that product of his, regardless of the price.

Woah!

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt anyone's feelings. I'm only stating how I feel. As far as who's shooting at who, I didn't target any D20 publishers in my initial post, I just mentioned (like Polyhedron and others) that the D20 stuff I was offering was for free. Khan chose to take it as an attack –– I didn't mean it as one, nor did I want (as usual) to get into a flame war over it. In fact, I thought my post would please a lot of people, I wasn't out to target anyone.

In any case, if I came across as caustic, I apologize, sincerely. I really didn't mean to insult anybody. Perhaps I'm having an off day. I'm usually a pretty nice guy (I swear!)

My response email was lighthearted (I thought!) but if it didn't come across that way, I apologize.

Well....i am a Barbarian, you know. We don't have a lot of Sense Motive. :)

I think it was the 'D20 publishers are Vanity Press' that pissed me off so much...........okay, so i wasn't really that pissed off. Don't tell anyone, or they'll take away my Raging privileges! :p

No problem,

The internet is not much for transmitting emotion. I wasn't aiming it at everyone except me, I was aiming it at me, right along with everyone!

I was saying that everyone except WotC and White Wolf (with maybe FFG creeping up) was vanity press. We (please note I said 'we!') are all like ticks on the back of the real industry.

Sorry for the miscue, my fault.

Let me speak up for Det here. I've been apart of the GODLIKE mailing list in the past and he has always been real cordial and helpful. In fact, his intial post didn't seem out of line to me at all.

Anyhoo, back OT. I'm glad to hear we can download Mearls work on Wild Talents. GODLIKE recieved great reviews, but I'm looking for a more typical super powers game, so I'll be looking at WT closely. The d20 rules seem like a great way to expand your audience.

There's a lot of d20 stuff that isn't my cup of tea - but I've been impressed by just how good most of it is. I'd personally say that 90% of it is worthwhile for some segment of the audience.

And, as a matter of fact, one of those products that isn't very polished in appearance, but seems to be stellar in design is Vigilance, a d20 supers game available from RPGNow.com right now. A good game available now for $5 is better than a free game (of as yet undetermined quality or interest) that I can't get!

As for Godlike, I was very excited by it when I heard about it before publication, but I don't really want to pay $40 for something that is 90% an alternate history of WWII. But I'll keep an eye on the products to see if anything I'm interested in shows up.
