Free D20 Supers!

Considering...

...everyone and his mother is releasing a D20 Supers supplement, it's not at all surprising the reaction. I had no idea the moderator was releasing his own supplement, but looking back on his comments, they seem to make a lot more sense in retrospect. In any case, I wasn't picking on him, or Green Ronin, or SAS or any other company out there, all I said in a public forum for announcements is that we were giving away a significant piece of work for free, and that you could choose to buy a supplement, or download one for nothing a significant marketing strategy .

"Saying, "Why pay for D20 supers when you can get one of the best D20 author's work on the subject for free?" on a forum where the host has announced plans to release a d20 supers product is like standing on the sidewalk outside of a grocery store telling everyone you're giving away the same groceries for free at your store."

No, it's more like where the grocery clerk has invited you to make announcements about your products in front of his stand, and then has a hissy fit about you undercutting his price.

Still, I think Green Ronin is doing slightly better than vanity press, and with all due respect to Mike Mearls, Steve Kenson (the man responsible for our for-money D20 Supers game)
I don't have the lisghtest idea of who Mike Mearls is, but I like what I've seen of Godlike. But if Mr. Kenson is working on your supers game, then you probably have my money already, you just don't know it yet. I really like his work. :)

OK. You may have noticed that I said "Morrus," not "Khan." Khan is not the owner of this site, Morrus is. Khan is a fan. Morrus would likely not even really take offense to what you posted, let alone have a "hissy fit." With all due respect, perhaps you should actually check to see who we're talking about before slamming him.

EDIT: Another thing that you'll find is that fans of the site, such as Khan, are very protective of the site, the moderators, and Morrus. Slamming any of them is a good way to get fans of the site riled up. Please take this as friendly advice, because I don't want a flame war to start up.

Not only is Mr. Kenson most definitely working on Mutants and Masterminds, but he's also written The Shaman's Handbook for Green Ronin. So if you want to send some money their way, I suggest picking it up. If my recommendation isn't enough, then perhaps these are:

I'll definitely be picking up M&M when it hits the shelves in southern NH.

The point of this forum if for publishers to speak out. You're specifically allowed to release press releases on this forum as well.

How was Mr Detwiler "taking a jab at Morrus" by speaking out and offering a press release?

Seems like that's the point.

The point is this: Morrus encourages the posting of press releases and publisher participation in discussions. Morrus owns this site. Morrus also is working on a d20 supers project. Mr. Detwiller was apparently not aware of either of the latter two facts. A fan of the site - again, not Morrus, who owns EN World - mistook part of Mr. Detwiller's post as a jab at Morrus. Re-read the first post, and think about how it could sound, given the circumstances. I'm sure it was unintentional, but given some of the past history of this site, it's entirely possible a fan of the site could take it wrong. We have seen a number of folk who have very publicly bashed Morrus, the site, and the moderators in the past.

My comments...? I wasn't aware that I'd made any.

Thanks, Mike, your recommendation means a lot. Needless to say, I'm looking forward to reading Mr. Mearls' d20 work in Wild Talents. If you haven't already checked out his OGL adaptation for GODLIKE, head on over to http://www.godlikerpg.com and take a look. It's a solid set of rules in its own right.

I'd say it's a great time to be a fan of superhero RPGs (as well as d20). We've gone from almost nothing in the genre to a true embarassment of riches. Personally, I'm looking forward to just about every new superhero product coming out this year, including Wild Talents, the new edition of Champions (and Champions Universe), Silver Age Sentinels (I got my copies at Origins), and, of course, Mutants & Masterminds (and it's Freedom City sourcebook, which you can use with whatever superhero RPG you favor). Choices for superhero gaming have rarely been richer!

Saying that "offering a d20 supers game for free is like standing outside a grocery offering to give away food". In the first place, it's not rude if you were *invited* there, which Mr Detwiler was, by the very kind Morrus.

That's very key. He was *invited* by the very kind person you're "protecting" to make such announcements, and that's all he did.

However, the logic here is also faulty. Ultimate Superhero Toolkit, from everything I have seen in Asgard (which looked cool to me), is a *modular* system. Meaning it works on top of another system.

So actually, the analogy is, Mr. Morrus is selling salad dressing, and Mr. Detwiler is offering to give away the salad. :)
