D&D 5E Freezing a region.

you guys make a really good point. I sorta thought I needed to have all this stuff in advanced but i guess there's no reason I cant came up with it later. Thanks for all the ideas though :)

The mechanic I'd use? An artifact that opens permanent tears in reality between the planes that is being used to open many holes to the Para-Elemental Plane of Ice. This allows beasties from that plane to walk into the Prime Material (populating it with cold monsters as well as the cold temperature).

It also allows the bad guy to mix in some other themes here and there to add more variety and keep the party from just using flaming weapons and fireballs all the times. He can prefer Ice, but work in other planar themes. Maybe the BBEG opens the path to the Shadowfell and uses undead and shadow monsters to take down a town. Maybe he opens a hole to the Elemental Plane of Water and floods a village located in a valley. Maybe he opens up a hole to the Abyss and allows demons free access to assault a Holy City. A giant unruly city filled with Thieves, Scoundrels and Disorder... suddenly finding 10,000 Modrons walking in and 'correcting' their society.

For the BBEG, I might use the Fey Prince of Frost to allow for a cruel trickster vibe in addition to the cold motif. He could be building up to freeing the a Primordial and the PCs have to restore his heart to stop his efforts... (if you know his tale)

One other thought is to just have a permanent swirling "hole" in the sky that constantly blasts down cold winter winds centered above the frost giant's keep.

That gives it a "what" (big ominous hole in sky) without giving a "how".

Do you want your PCs to be able to do anything about it piecemeal, or just at the resolution? It could be various magical giant ice crystals (or whatever) cold generators that the giants are planting as they invade. Which allows attacks on them to take them otu and (temporarily) free an area of the cold. And, of course, the crystals in outposts right on the edge of what they control are easier to get to then the now built-up strongholds deeper in their conquered territory so you have a sensible level/difficulty progression.

Considering your party is already 15th, how about a Titan who is actually the progenitor of the Frost Giant race. Empyreans (MM pg 130) are CR 23 titans and would be a good base to customize for the sire of the Frost Giants.

Realizing campaign was the wrong word for this I'm planning on trying to complete the whole thing in five sessions so Adventure would have been a better choice. I'm kind of thinking that I want them to be able to stop the snow by the third session, so probably going to go with like an artifact they can destroy or a creature they can kill.

Hey guys, so I could really use some advice/ideas for this campaign I'm working on.
In the campaign I'm having an army of frost giants invade a temperate climate region by having their leader/ the BBEG whose controlling them change the regions climate to a frozen tundra. The main thing I'm having trouble with is coming up with ideas for how he would be doing this. I haven't actually decided what the BBEG is so if there was a creature that could do this that would work really well, or maybe some sort of item or spell? Any suggestions (or criticisms) are welcome. Oh, and if you guys need more details leme know. Thanks in advanced :)

My first thought was a cabal of druids under his command performing a ritual.

He might have an ancient artifact.

His clerics might have made an extraordinary supplication to the gods of winter.

Really, absolutely anything you come up with work. Don't worry about the mechanics of the ritual or the item. They are simply artifacts that accomplish what tbey need to accomplish.

I immediately thought of Marvel comics / Thor's "Cask of Ancient Winters". Give the BBEG an artifact along the lines of this: http://marvel.wikia.com/wiki/Casket_of_Ancient_Winters. You can do any sort of foretelling or lead in adventure having the party get there too late and then having to track down the villain as he walks across the countryside causing winter to all areas and calling down the Frost Giants, winter wolves; Remorhaz; White Dragons etc.

Holy smokes that's awesome; one of my players is a huge Marvel fan, he'll get a huge kick out of this.
