French Foreign Legion to Invade Wild West Town (1882)

Was just looking at the cover of spellslinger, the Horizon book with the gunfighters on dragon like mounts attacking a stage coach, and got to thinking about this thread. Do the Spainish have any old style paladin holdovers? Just picturing the PCs in your game running from mounted paladins, maybe Eldritch Knights fighter/sorcerer combos instead.

Yes, I'm thinking of going that route. I'll be doing a future module involving Coranado's earlier conquest of the American Southwest and things he left behind.

FYI, I've now post the first game night of the current module over in the Story Hour forum.

Still taking suggestions for tonight's game. I'll recheck this thread prior to game time.

I'll check that out, and keep us posted. I found this a very interesting idea as well.

Well, last week's game didn't go as planned. They had one more levitation device than I had anticipated so managed to make it back to Arizona. When they were flying over the southwestern corner of New Mexico they spotted the French thirty miles away but opted to fly low and dark at night to get by them unseen.

So they're home, which is where we will start tomorrow night's game. But I'm not done with the French just yet. I've gone through my miniatures and have the following:

10 French Foreign Legion infantry soldiers with rifles
7 French Army Infantry soldiers (late 19th/early 20th century dress uniforms)
1 Mounted French Field Marshall
1 Mounted Arabian King
13 Mounted Arabs riflemen
2 standing Arabs with knives

So for Sunday night's game I'm figuring these all came from the Sahara with the 7 remaning French Wizard/Theives. That'll leave 41 French & Arab allies to invade a wild west mining town in search of the artifacts.

Not sure what strategy the French will take yet and am open to suggestions.

Have some of the Arabs be assassins (whether you use the class or not is up to you) who sneak into the town in the dead of night, neutralizing any aid the PCs may have and otherwise rendering a home field advantage moot. Depending on the behavior of the PCs in the past, the french may take hostages and try to negotiate a deal for the artifacts.

The other option is to somehow lure the PCs, or wait for them, to leave the town where they could be ambushed.

I don't see the French doing this in uniform though. Seems like it would result in an act of war between the US and France if there is an armed military takeover of a US town. While a group of bandits who all just happened to be French might be diplomatically explained away.

Three factors regarding the uniforming: (1) Right now the French Government is in political disarray (as an indirect result of the PC's actions in Europe) and so the facton temporarily in charge could always disavow any knowledge of this group to avoid a war (2) If they manage to get this artifact it will make them more powerful than the United States (3) The DM has some really neat painted miniatures that he wants to use.

Last week's game had them just relaxing in town. They've now received word though that the French are heading in that direction. The characters are planning to first hide the artifact on a mountaintop cave and then move on with the zepplin to attack the French at dawn. This is also all taking place on the same night (March 18, 1882) that the Cowboy Gang shoots and kills Deputy Marshall Morgan Earp in the adjacent town of Tombstone, so elements of that may also flow into Sunday night's game.
