Order of the Stick reminded me of some fun I had with this spells as DM a few years back. In my games I really like using handouts so had a note prepared by the bad guy for the PCs with explosvie Ruins on them. It is just the PCs always had to read the notes, they knew what was going to happen but could never resist just in case. Some of the notes read as follows
I can't believe you feel for it (Make save)
You're stupider then I thought (Make save)
You feel for it again (make save)
Don't you ever learn (make save)
Honest, the next one will be safe (make save)
I lied (make save)
It became an on going gag basically. Not everything they found had explosive ruins on it, but some did. They would detect for magic but that didn't always help as the treasures and equipment woulld have scrolls, important messages were often masked by magic etc. I think they could have done more to try to protect themselves but they didn't. They would take turns picking up and reading messages so that not just one of them would always get the blast in the face. Ah, what good times that was.....
