Furious Smash + Hunter's Quarry = damage roll?

Mengu

First Post
Ok, with Furious Smash, since there is no damage roll, weapon enhancement and feat bonuses don't get added in. But what if I have Hunter's Quarry from Warrior of the Wild, and hit my quarry with Furious Smash? Suddenly I'm rolling a d6 for damage. Does that mean I can now add weapon enhancement and feat bonuses to my damage roll?

It's not a [W], so no.

Why does it have anything to do with a [W]. The "Weapon" keyword is what allows the addition of enhancement bonus damage.

If you don't want to be burdened by weapon complexity, for the sake of argument, assume I have a flaming sword and Hellfireblood, so the feat bonus does not need the "weapon" keyword.

The apparent consensus is that "extra damage" is intended only to apply to "damage rolls," and any damage bonus that does not specificly apply to "damage rolls," but "damage dealt" and so on, has been misworded.

As currently written in the PHB Errata:
“Once per round, when you hit your quarry with an attack, the attack deals extra damage based on your level.”
Other than the Errata above only places "extra damage" is explictly called out in the PHB is similar wording for the Rogue and Warlock, extra damage granted on a critical hit, PHB278, and extra damage granted by a magical weapon, PHB225.

"Extra damage" is not mentioned under Hit, PHB57, only "modifiers to...damage rolls," nor is it mentioned under Damage, PHB276.

As written, the "extra damage" granted by Hunter's Quarry appears to apply whenever damage is dealt by a successful attack roll. However, most read "Extra damage" as implicitly a "bonus to damage rolls," in which case it would not apply to Furious Smash.

Absent further Errata, perhaps my partner would be interested in taking up your case, as I am currently deeply involved in litigation regarding Fleeting Ghost. But this represents the current understanding as practiced in the player community.

Nice. Well done!

This brings up an interesting point. In Aragorn v. Grishnak (Edoras Superior Court), Aragorn, a human Warlord/Ranger multiclass argued first, that since his extra Hunter's Quarry damage applied to a successful attack, it not only applied to Furious Smash, but also, since damage dice were rolled to determine the extra damage dealt, that his bonuses to damage rolls applied to that roll, e.g. Weapon Focus and Enhancement.

Grishnak argued that if that were true, then conversely, since no damage dice are rolled for critical hits with non-magic weapons, damage bonuses such as Weapon Focus and Twin Weapon Fighting would not be applied to such hits.

While the Honorable Wormtongue, presiding in lieu of King Theoden, ruled against Aragorn, it is currently being appealed in Minas Tirith, where a more favorable outcome is expected.

1)

Hunter's Quarry is simply extra damage. Therefore it can apply whenever you deal damage from an attack.

Sneak Attack and Warlock's Curse are applied after a damage roll. Therefore, no roll, no Sneak Attack, no Curse.

2)

Are you rolling damage on a power with the Weapon keyword? Yes? Then it's a damage roll. Stuff that adds to damage rolls can now add to Hunter's Quarry.

3)

Grasping Shards pre-21st level also works like this.

4)

Extra damage from any of these three sources can only apply to a target you hit. So no, you cannot apply your Hunter's Quarry damage to the damage cleave does to a secondary opponent.

In order for damage to be extra damage there has to be some non-extra damage for it to be extra in relation to. If you could add quarry to non-damaging attacks, the quarry damage wouldn't be extra in that case, it would be the only damage.
