Future Retro-Clone That Never Was

The Green Adam

Confused? Excellent...

I was always confused as a kid by the fact that Star Frontiers wasn't 3 hardcover books seperated into a GM book, Player book and Monster...er...Alien Book. With the creation of Mutant Future, I was wondering what a Class/Level space adventure game based on OD&D or AD&D-ish rules would be like.

Would you check it out? Would you buy it? Why wasn't it ever done that way? I mean, we had Expedition to the Barrier Peaks. How far from there to Aliens & Astrobases (TM!) could it possibly be?

StarSIEGE does not have classes, levels, or an alien/monster book. :erm:

True, not in the classic D&D sense. However, once the character is built it works like it has class and level mechanics. Yes, it doesn't have a monster/alien book, but another thing I like about its modular build type system is that you can make them pretty fast.

So I get to tailor build characters and monsters. Rather than "cookie cutter" stuff. So you get to build your character the way you want, build monsters much the same way, and then use "level" mechanics. Just instead of class level its your level of skill in a given area.

So similar mechanical feel, but much better building options, and still feels easy to do.

I feel the uncontrollable erge to make this game. Its a game that has always existed in the back of my mind, like something I played in the past but couldn't have.

While I'm not a Class/Level system fan, it just seems that if a SciFi game had been done this way back in the late 70's or early 80's we'd all be playing/dreading its 4th Edition by now.

I am so jazzed. And the art...oh my the art. If I make it famous I'll remember all of you fondly, lol.

My god this would be easy to do.

I think I'll write something up. Anyone interested?

I would be...seeing as how I started the thread and said "I feel the uncontrollable erge to make this game". :hmm:

Just kidding! I'd love to see someone take a crack at this idea. The key in my mind is that it should be 'generic' in the way D&D was...all the basics are there, Aliens, Ray Gun/Blasters, Starships, Exotic Creatures and Landscapes, etc. but presented in a 'use what you like, how you like' manner. I picture a Star Frontier meets Star Wars meets Star Trek (I give it 3 Stars right off the back) kinda atmosphere. Its Science Fiction but its less about Science and more about Adventure and Glory Across the Cosmos! If you need any artwork be sure to let me know.
