Thanks - didn't realize it was on HBO GO already. I know they already scaled the wall climb back - I think Mance said to get 20 men, while it was 120 in the book, if I recall, and it was led by the Magnar of Thenn, not Tormund Giantsbane, the Tall Talker, Tormund Thunderfist, Horn-blower and Breaker of Ice, Husband to Bears, the Mead-king of Ruddy Hall, Speaker to Gods and Father of Hosts...

The climb was pretty much the mildest thing in the episode and the one thing everyone already knew (the title, duh). But there's a couple of very specific things which I'm thinking are there to shock everyone. And you won't know what they are until you see them. I don't think it's even possible to guess one of them.

My original theory regarding the longtime character killed in this episode
was that Ros was fail-safe for the writing of the plot. You'll recall that Martin was still struggling with the Meereenese Knot when the show started airing. They introduced Ros, and then quickly established her as being extraordinarily well connected for a mere show-created character. She was from the North, knew Theon Greyjoy, met both Lannister brothers, moved to Kings Landing, and got Littlefinger interested. In other words, had the show ever ended up writing itself into the same corner that Martin had been struggling with (since at the time they had no way of knowing how he would write the story out of the knot) they would have on the show a character they could use to introduce other characters who otherwise might not have any connections with each other to each other. A writers failsafe. But Dance was published. Martin got past the plot knot. And Ros it seems was no longer needed. Alas.

It was a plot structure problem GRRM was having when he was writing A Dance With Dragons.

Edit:
It was also used as a joke for the readers benefit in the Podrick and the prostitutes scene. "She is the only one who can perform the Meereenese Knot".
