Gamma World New Edition Question?

Gallo22

First Post
Curious...is anyone out there playing the new Gamma World just on its own? And when I say just on its own, I mean no adjustments, no other system add-ons, etc. Just using the Modern rules base (that expected).

It just seems to me that new rules have died already and the interest is gone. When I see new threads (like this one  ) on the subject, not many are answering or replying. It kind of tells me the game has not really caught on? Am I wrong here?

Just wondering?

I'm afraid you might be right, kid. Personally, I love the new Gamma World, in spite of its warts. I'm starting up a Gamma World game in the new year and we'll be pretty much playing it "as is", though I intend to use GURPS Ultra Tech and Bio Tech for inspiration (but I always use additional materials, no matter what game I'm playing).

Has the game not caught on? My impression is similar to yours. Too bad, really...but remember that Gamma World has *always* been a niche game. [shrug]

I like the new GW, and I have to say a hearty "Thanks!" to SSS for reviving one of my favorite games.

However, if I believe there are certain shortcomings in the core book (lack of mutations, psi rules, etc.) that I can rectify using other products (like Darwin's World) why shouldn't I use them? After all, people have been doing the same thing with their D&D games pretty much since the game was introduced. ;)

The fact that people don't run a "pure" game doesn't necessarily mean the rules/game system has not caught on or is a failure.

Yes, but that was not my question. I guess we will see with how many responses are posted, huh?

Sorry if I misinterperted the question. :)

No problems here Mike. I love Gamma World and have been playing it since 1st edition. I have pretty much everything ever put out for it and while I do not like the new rules in the least...I still want it to succeed very much so. Why you might ask? Because it would be great to have more Gamma fans out there to game with, pure and simple.

It's just that I've seen a lack of post and responses to the Gamma World threads and it's a sign (at least to me) that the new rules really did not make an impression out "there". It's too bad really. :(

I'm sure some potential new GW gamers were frightened off by old GW grognards like us ranting about how lame the new rules were.

Kind of a double-edged sword if you think about it... ;)

You might be right!

I purchased a copy and plan on running it when I get a chance to. No DW add-on or anything else other than a few more mutations from the earlier editions.

I will let you know how it goes when I do get a chance to play it.

As a side note; Gamma World was the game I got my wife to first try her hand at gaming. She loved it.

My experience is that the only people that listen to the whinging grognards are the game designers, who get annoyed with them and that's about as far as it goes.
