Gate spells and PC's

Cheiromancer

Adventurer
A bunch of related questions:

1. Can a hostile caster gate unwilling PC's into their presence?
1.a) Does it make a difference if the caster and/or the PC are outsiders and/or not on the prime material plane?

2. Can a gate penetrate an extradimensional space, such as created by Mordenkainen's magnificent mansion, a portable hole, or a rope trick?

3. A caster can control a gated creature who has no more than twice the caster's HD. Any limitations on that?

4. Is the creature gated in called or summoned?

1. Tough question. It depends how you interpret the "unique beings" clause of the Gate spell. Some believe it to mean no named individuals can be called with a Gate spell. Others assert that only unique creatures that are the only member of their race (e.g. Tarrasque) are subject to this restriction.

a) Gate only works between planes. So as long as the caster and the target are on different planes, this requirment is met. You cannot open a gate to a different point on the same plane.

2. Technically, these extradimensional spaces open up pocket spaces in the Ethereal, so I would say yes.

3. Some treat it as a domination effect. The way it is worded in the spell seems to suggest that this is the case.

4. Called (see the spell heading). In other words, if the creature you gate is slain then it is *really* dead.

I agree with gfunk, except that creatures native to the prime material plane can NEVER be summoned or called. Only outsiders can. Not even a creature on another plane can summon a prime, even if the prime native itself is on another plane. I believe the Manual of the Planes explains this in more depth.

Damn, too bad... I was going to have my players gated by a powerful wizard from another plane to fight for him in the middle of one of their adventure :( . I may do it anyway:p

And now the big question. Can you gate lvl 20 monks? :D

If you want a special spell effect just create a spell which this wizard has researched. But don´t let it fall into the hands of your PCs.

Hey...

Don't forget that Genasi, Aasimar, Tieflings, Half-Celestials and Half-Fiends are labeled "Outsiders" (Celestial and Fiendish templates are just "Magical Beats", though). That means they could potentially be Gated by someone(thing) from another plane.

And yes, the same could possibly apply to 20th level Monks.

I've also had players that thought they could gate in a specific HD creature (ie: I'd like to gate in a 38 HD Balor). You can't, you CAN gate in a Balor, but you can't be specific as to it's HD. The HD limit in there is to limit the race of the creature, in other words if you were an 18th lvl wizard, you couldn't gate in a creature who'se HD was 40 or over.

I did something similar to start a campaign. A 19th level wizard was in a battle, decided he needed to "call in a favor" and attempted to Gate in a celestial being. Unfortunately, his spell was "disrupted" (no official rules here) by a spell specifically designed to "randomize" a gate, and he got the PCs instead (taking them from their respective primes).

Later!

That is a plausible weird side effect of casting from a scroll and not having a high enough level.

Maybe a powerful being gave the 16th level wizard a scroll and said, "Call me if you need some help". Now he has these lousy adventurers when he was expecting a Deva.
