Gen Con - Good bad and ugly

The Good
Hanging out with my friends.
BattleStations and Kayfabe were great
Meeting the creators of Battle Stations
Mutants and Masterminds II
Some good swag
The Tiger Girl. What can I say?

The Bad
Not getting to spend time with the Enworlders
The crowds...guhhhh. Walking was a real pain at times
Running out of money Saturday nite so not going on Sunday.
Not getting to play Deadlands. I was psyched to play some Wild West fun

The Ugly
The Round Robin DND game I played was pretty ugly. The idea was good, but the implementation was pretty off-kilter.

and The Lucky
Skipping dinner with friends and therefore not getting food poisoning

Details please (keeping in mind that a half-block in that goddam weather means roughly the equivalent of soaking about a pint more sweat into your clothing).

India Garden - about 2 blocks down from the corner of Embassy Suites - past the italian place there. OH. MY. GOD. Is that *GOOD* Indian food. Try the lunch buffet - you'll stuff yourself. The chai tea is incredibly good. Dessert... mhmmm - This place made Shem and I's list of "must visit during gencon next year" list.

Know what was wierd though? I went back there with Jake, Denise, theo and Fraser and there was no imposed tip! It seemd to be soemthing to do with the private room.
Usually it's a size of party thing, in my experience. Imposed tips, while illegal, don't normally get to me. Imposed high tips for crappy service, however...
Why you son of a bitch:) You take that back now...that's my Indy "Home away from Home" and the Spiritual Center of Teflon Billy's Rapscallions:)
Don't worry -- you guys are still in charge of the secret police when we seize power.

Ok. That's a good point. After only a year out here, I forget that those from west of the Central Time Zone have no resistance to the steambath mistakenly called "summer" out here. The Indian buffet wasn't anything special but it was perfectly good. The Mexican place I found in Darkest Suburbia was nice but way too far -- and I can't remember what it was called.

Wow! We must have written our endorsements of this place at the same time. Glad to hear the other stuff is good there too. Sounds like they make a mean gulab jamun.

Hmm... I'll have to find out where that is sometime if it's within walking distance.

The heat was actually really comfortable for us - but then I was coming in from NC - so 70's was Very nice compared to 90's and up, even if the humidity levels were the same.

Moral of the story: Put your kids before gaming, OK? And for the rest: if you hear a kid in trouble, try to help.

You. Rock.

The parents should be beaten with a flail.

Good show, jolly good show. Sorry it kept you up, but glad you cared.

It sounds like Steak and Shake is the unmitigated 'big loser' at the con. I just decided to avoid the place due to what appeared to be long waits and I was so freakin busy that there was no way I could just 'pop in' for a bite to eat.

For those paying 300 bucks a night for hotels you REALLY need to get a cheaper hotel or more people to share the expense with.

Good heavens yes! I paid far less than that at the Embassy, and got both free breakfast and free happy hour every day.

Good: Playing RPGA games with friends.

Blowing money on The Gamers DVD, Northern Crown, Eternal Rome, Stormwreck and War of the Lance Dragonlance 3.5 book

Playing Champions

Bad
Playing Dave Arenson's Blackmoor with bad DM
Missing a lot of seminars like the new D&D movie discussion and the Ed Greenwood roast
Playing midnight madness and over sleeping one lot.
Missing the Ennies and ENworld gathering again
Smelly gamer at RPGA table I judged.

It's pretty common in the U.S. for restaurants to impose an automatic gratuity on parties of 6 or more, which would explain why five people wouldn't get it. Its ostensible purpose is so that the server of a large party won't get stiffed. The "common knowledge" is that larger groups tend to tip less when they see what everyone else in the group is tipping, figuring the server is "getting enough." :) Since I know what hell those ladies and gents go through, it doesn't phase me.
