Gencon buzz seems much less than last year

Actually... we ARE them. There are a LOT of ENWorlders who are also "Your Turn"-izens, and for that matter Dragonsfooters, Necromancers, et. al. If a segment of a board is quite vocal, it puts a spin on people's perceptions of the whole board, when the truth of the matter is that most of its members are sypathetic or just neutral to a given opinion. That's why insulting members of other forums is counter-productive: You are biting off your own toes to spite your foot.

It's definitely interesting, though.

okay... so i won't use so many MUPs or Sock puppets.... sheesh. you coulda just said stop it diaglo... :o

I totally agree with you, die_kluge! I went looking for those other products, and it exposed me to a broader world of product. I like ENnies the process, too.

As far as Gencon--well, look, it's now got a whole 'nother con that's marketed as a twin. Triplets, if you count EuroGencon. I know a lot of people from my area (Southern California) aren't going because there's no point--we're going to have one of our own. Albeit smaller, but sometimes that's better.

I also think the bad logistical problems from last year are making an impact. People are letting their disastisfaction with the lines (and ultimately some-what sour experiences as a result) speak for them. Who wants to go to a Con you can't get into without suffering through unprepared registration? Sometimes smaller is better...

That's really the best way you can ensure change: attend or not. And the buzz is down because people are choosing not to attend, and spending their hard-earned and economy-impacted money on other things--like rent.

There has been a HUGE amount of product on the market lately, with the promise of even more on the way. The summer product push has caught up with the consumer base. Think about it--those little WotC minis can be a big drain on the wallet when you add it all up! I know people who have spent their plane ticket to GenCon in minis--not to mention the plethora of pricey little books and supplements that have found their way onto office shelves... Money, money, money... Somethin's gotta give, and it's GenCon buzz and attendance.

Last year I drove to the con with my ex-girlfriend, with whom I shared a room and a bed. This year, I'm crashing with BrooklynKnight and friends.

I'm still hyped about going, but it just . . . won't be the same.

Ouch.

I read through about 85% of that mess. I'm a little stunned about the amount of venom that was thrown around in there. I guess I just never new there was so much anger that floated around on the ENnies.

Live and learn I guess.

Holy crap! Lots of people have their panties in a bunch!

My two cents (mind you, fair market value is considerably less) is this:

Don't fight about it. Read people's criticisms (yeah, even the jerks) and try to implement good ideas and ignore bad ideas next year.

These are the ENnies, not the Malhavocies or the WoTCees. Do it your way, and if you see a good recommendation, implement it. If you don't, well, make the changes you see fit.

I think people are mostly blowing off steam. I don't think there's going to be a massive support loss as far as the ENnies are concerned.

Nah, it can be the same. I'm sure you could share BrooklynKnight's bed - you just have to buy him dinner first.

And I agree about the bad logistical problems. Though I was lucky enough to get their early enough last year (folks, pre-registration is your friend!), I can empathize with those that were stuck in that mile-long line to get into the place for a one-day badge. Man, I would sorely p-offed if I had to do that.

And the pick-up games area was a complete farce. We'll see if that improves this year, because if it doesn't, I may consider Origins from here on out, or DragonCon.

Y'know, Teflon Billy's first reply reminds me why I love that man. Damned attractive, and intellectually hot-tempered.

Another issue with the lower interest this year may be that the con is much later in August than usual. Many students won't be going, and even adults may have a hard time making it this late in the summer.

HOLY FREAKIN' CRAP!!!!! I CAN'T WAIT FOR GENCON TOMORROW!!!!

I'm totally psyched. . .so many goodies, so many great games. . . I'm sure not feeling the apathy you are!

Hoody Hoo!

Well, with l'affair Dancy, the ENnie fracas on a couple of publisher forums, and ENWorld going down from a hurricane, people just seem to have other stuff on their minds.

I blame Destan's new setting.

LOL! Well-said BiggusGeekus---if Valus' splash is drowning out the rest of the stuff you listed, I think Destan will be a happy man come Sunday :D
