D&D 5E Gencon release?

Before TerraDave comes in and comments that this thread has been done before, I haven't been able to check the forum much over the last couple weeks as I am traveling and only discovered the demon thing a couple days ago. But I am wondering what the current thinking is about Gencon, as it seems that demons is coming in the fall and not August, which would leave a big and mysterious gap in the schedule. Can we expect a big release at Gencon? A FR book or MM2 perhaps? Or will it be all about hyping the demon?

Haven't heard anything, but my gut feeling is "no" - if they were going to release something, they'd have announced it by now. I may be wrong about that, of course. :)

I'd be very surprised if they weren't cooking something for August. If they don't release something at GenCon, it would be the first actual mistake I would consider them to have made in their 5E strategy.

No release in August. We would know as it would have been in the Rage of Drizzt press release. Besides, we know that they don't do anything else aside from APs.

Aside from people being able to playtest Sword Coast Legends, what I see is the potential for announcements. Now that the core books are launched they seem to be able to get ahead of the schedule and not just cut it close or have delays. So they might be able to tell us with more certitude what is up coming. They took us by surprised with the announcement of Rage of Drizzt 6 months (more or less) in advance.

Maybe they announce the first AP of 2016. Maybe Ed Greenwood announces that FR campain setting book Mearls tweeted about. Maybe they announce an OGL or PDFs. Maybe they announce/launch a new digital platform or something.

Yeah, TerraDave does that, lol.
I am really believing that they will surprise convention goers with something. I think this year their core line of products is out so they should have a booth presence. I'll be attending so I'll check it out. Certainly GF9 will be there selling their licensed products and spell cards/screens/mats.

An FR setting book would be awesome, and I think a lot of FR fans are hoping for this at the anniversary party.

I actually think they should pick a different setting to be the first campaign setting book. EVERYTHING they have put out is set in the Realms. A setting book set elsewhere would give people who don't like the Realms another option.

"Too many books are bad for the game!" "I hate the Forgettable Realms!" "Another Realms campain book full of lore will add to the confusion of gamers old and new!" *multiple shake fist*

Had to do it.

Anyway, in his tweet Mearls mentioned kickstarter. If Ed Greenwood announces the kickstarter at GenCon, it probably means it will start a month later. The fund raising campain itself will probably last another month. That would mean 60+ days before any element of Rage of Drizzt gets released. Cross-branding release mean lots of strain on the wallet and RoD would compete directly with the kickstarter campain.

So I'm thinking either RoD is a later November/early December release or the FR campain book isn't due this year. I do wonder how it will work. Is the Sword Coast off limites and Ed can do about anything with the rest? Does Ed talk to Perkins for each region of the FR? If so, has this already happened/is happening or will this start after the kickstarter campain, meaning its release could take a lot of time since Perkins has so little time already (but he does now have help from SKR)?

I still think one AP should be set in the Realms and the other in various campain settings so they can offer more diversity and please more people*. Not gonna happen soon.

*Althought very recently on Paizo's boards, Vic Wertz said that when they were still publishing Dungeon mag, when an issue that contained one adventure set in one paticular setting (never mentioned), sells for that issue drop noticeably. So curious to know which one. They did a lot of FR and Eberron adventures. Some DS special issues. So not too sure which one.
