WotC has a lot of adventure maps and Paizo's Dungeon suppliments have some too. I just steal one of those, doctor it up in Gimp and use that. End result looks really nice.

Or use the map maker here (scroll down). (on second thought, don't bother.)

You can also use Paint.

Speaking of which, what's the general policy on dramatic last words when your hitpoints drop from -9 to -10?
You can never make them unless you have Diehard because you're already unconscious at -9. On the other hand, dramatic last words when your HP drop from positive to negative are A-okay!

I've used the code tag
[code]__________
.1..2.....
..3.......
4.......E.
......D...
.......C..
__________[/code]
results in
Code:
__________
.1..2.....
..3.......
4.......E.
......D...
.......C..
__________

and I've used maps generated in POVRay. The latter take a bit to be created in the first place, though. :heh: I don't recommend it as a starting program, especially as it isn't designed for that. :uhoh:

Anyone know a good battle map maker?

Look for a free program called Dungeon Crafter or steal them from the Wizards or Paizo sites. To use them in actual combat you'll need some progrram that can keep separate layers, like photoshop, so you can move the characters and monsters around from round to round.

Are you planning on retiring one of your characters, then?

Yep. Babette's not really feeling right for me. If she can finish her current adventure alive and third level, I'll retire her for a kobold integrator.

That's probably the coolest idea for a character I've seen in a while--a kobold who performs calculus? Brilliant!

Gimp is free and gives you all the cool photoshop tools you will need for mapping.
