Generally Discouraged (In-Person Gaming)

That sounds like a great idea. I do see some of my online players occasionally (they live in the 1-3 hour range). My old college buddies and I try to get together a couple times a year for games and fellowship.
The other group would be trickier - since we're talking about places that have Meat Raffles. But that could be fun.
I am also trying to get to more conventions this year. I went to GaryCon and will be attending GenCon. I hope that helps too.

I'd look into Retreater-con. Of course, I'd have to do Payn-a-thon as a reaction. Gaming meat raffle might be breaking new ground even here!

Yeah. There's nothing on Meetup within 3 hours of my town.

People still use Meetup? Where I am, I've found that it's not that difficult to find someone willing to play in person, but it's very difficult to find someone who I can count on to reliably show up and whose playstyle is compatible with mine. I tried getting a Vampire campaign going at the end of 2019, and I couldn't even get everyone to show up the very first day to make characters. I had a few players who had a great deal of difficulty grasping that we were playing a Camarilla campaign, as the players voted on, and kept trying to shoehorn Anarch characters which was annoying. The campaign never got off the ground, which is a good thing I guess since a few months later we were all in COVID mode.

My friend who lives an hour away in a town that is about twice the size of mine used Meetup to form his current Pathfinder group - but that was at least a decade ago.

Yeap, I think Meetup is becoming a thing of the past. I recently been looking at it and dont see a lot of action. Covid seems to have killed most meetups. Other social media just seems to do it better now. Though, even when popular meetup was a crapshoot. Some towns would have massive groups meeting weekly and others wouldn't have anything within 60+ miles.

One piece of advice I'd give is never ever start a long term campaign with folks you dont know. Start with one shots first so you can see if the players will be reliable and interested. Also, you don't want a crappy playstyle from someone who is committed because then you have to deal with them for a long time!

My F2F group ignored COVID and met weekly. But RL opportunities broke up the group after 20 years.

Since then I've gone on-line, and I'll never go back. Quality gamers willing to commit to long-term weekly campaigns are plentiful, and the comfort level just cannot be beaten. I wish I could have made the switch years ago.

Meanwhile, F2F groups in my area, outside of the high school and university, have died away to nothing.
