Ghoul Stones

Ah, that's what I was thinking. Bits of bone, teeth and hair solidified into a stone, sort of like a bezoar. It develops in the gut of the ghoul and is said to have magical properties, from controlling undead to regeneration.

Make a touch attack with a ghoul stone and the target must make a save to avoid paralyzis.

The Ghoul Stone is a minor artifact; it's bearer gains immunities as if he was an undead and can make paralyzing slam/claw attacks. Turns you evil over time, though.

A ghoul stone is a +1 returning, undead bane sling bullet.

A Ghoul Stone is a necromantic wondrous item. It is in fact a tombstone that essentially let's you use Create Undead 1/day. Place it on the grave of relatively fresh corpse for 24 hours, and the corpse rises as a ghoul next sunset.

Ghoul stones could the remains of a ghouls brain long after the body has been destroyed. It would emanate evil in a 25 yard radius. If eaten by another ghoul or ghast the undead gains the evolved undead template from libris mortis. If the ghoul stone is implanted in the middle of a graveyard it starts pulsing and feeds negative energy to all corpses in the gorund. After a period of seven days all corpses rise as ghouls if they had 3 hit dice or less in life or ghasts if they had more than 3 hit dice in life.

Minor Artifact

Ghoul Stones.

This irregularly shaped, mottled grey green stone, about the size of a skull looks subtly out of place wherever it rests, nothing you can put your finger on though.

When inert, the stone projects feelings of nagging hunger out to 150 feet to anyone who is a mundane. Arcane spellcasters (on an appropriate skill check, ie spellcraft or Knowledge [Arcana]) can tell that there is something unnatural occurring, but can not tell what it might be. They still experience a nagging hunger. Divine Spellcasters definitely feel something wrong and malevolent about the feelings of hunger. No one can pinpoint where these feelings emanate from.

When activated (either unwittingly or with intent) and left unattended, the feelings of hunger become almost maddening, and anyone within 100 feet must succeed at a Will saving throw (determine your own DC) every minute or give into the hunger, looking for any source of food available (including livestock and people.)

If held by the activator, anyone slain within a vicinity of 50 feet whilst under the influence of the Hunger aura rises again in 1d4 rounds as a ghoul, under the control of an awakened Ghoul Stone (determine appropriate intelligence level). At this point the wielder of the stone must contend with the stone's Ego or become its slave.

If the wielder succeeds, he gets control of the stone and hence any ghouls, and the Paralyse ability.

I like this. I may be yoinking this idea real quick.

Macbeth, there is nothing to see here. These are not the adventure hooks you are looking for. ;)

I'm just glad that someone finally got use out of something I concoted!

With due 'spect to Kesho for kicking the brain into gear, and the requisite five minute lunch break it took to write it up.

Made it back to the threads after a hard couple of days at the office, and what do I find?

A whole mess of great ideas!!!

There is enough detail here to set up Ghoul Stones for a campaign world - plus, create a good number of other items at the same time...

Thanks all! This is what this community is all about - sharing ideas to make everyone's game better...

Anyone have any idea if the "flesh" of a ghoul counts as flesh in regards to a Flesh to Stone spell? If so, this could be a source of Ghoulstone or Ghoul Stones. While a Shatter spell would not affect anything as large as a stone(d) ghoul (unless it was a ghoulish-anorexic-teenage-halfling, a ghoulish pixie, or something else small) there would be other ways to break it, or other reasons for it to have been broken. The broken pieces of a "stoned" ghoul could have any or some of the properties mentioned earlier...
