Glaive, Falchion, Katar

Yeah, the Glaive is one of the best Vorpal weapons. Ain't hard to roll "4" when you're rolling 2d4 for basic attacks and up to 14d4 for a 29th-level power.

Hehe, I know what I'm doing if I ever go Epic, then. I wager it'd be a lot of fun, seeing those 4's pop up.

Well, typically your Falchion is a good go-to weapon as a military two-handed sword. Fullblade is probably better overall but for a crit fishing character that wants to save on a feat its a perfectly good weapon to start off with. Nice for a low level avenger.

Katar is pretty much the go-to choice now for Tempest Fighter since double sword is somewhat nerfed. It could be a good choice for a non-TWF melee ranger as well, like a hunter or beast master as an off-hand weapon.

Glaive is definitely right up there. In fact I've seen very few polearm characters using anything else in the long run. Halberd does a bit more damage but typically your polearm guys are DEX based and don't really get much out of an axe group weapon.

If there is a 'classic' weapon that is really in the 'who uses this' category it would have to be the mace. You'll see a few clerics wielding them for specific weapon enchantments but aside from that the weapon itself is useless. The Ruthless Ruffian build was supposed to focus on using maces but frankly I have yet to even hear of anyone building one and playing it. Feat support is minimal and without any military or superior versions it is frankly not really worth wasting a feat on. The old mace got shafted pretty hard by 4e.

And sling! Though it sounds like the new Rogue uses the sling?

Oh, and Quarterstaff!

Jay

There's some sling-only powers in MP2.

Quarterstaff tho, not seeing a lot of love from martial types... it's really more in implement-country.

Hell, even spiked gauntlet's got some goooooood support now.

I totally agree about the quarterstaff. I love this weapon and I thought to do a Tempest Fighter with it but I would lose all the weapon specific effects...

And spear? I want to build a spear & shield PC...my own spartan! But...the spear...T_T

Eladrin gets a little spear love, at least with the +2. It's not quite Dwarven Weapon Training, as it doesn't grant much in the way of freebie profiency, but it's a start.

You can do a pretty good build with spear and shield. Its not quite on a par with some of the other builds, but it isn't shabby. There will always in any system be a few builds that are a little ahead of others.

Trident has a couple of things in its favor over a longsword or battle axe, for example. You can throw it, which can be useful on occasion. You lose some things in comparison, but hey, it's certainly doable. Shame there are only a few one-handed spears, but I guess we have to take what we can get.

Eh, how many real significant variations of spear are possible? You have the throwing type (javelin), the basic stabby kind (spear), the one with several points (trident), and the long two handed variety (longspear, greatspear, why 2 variations we may never know...). Minor differences of construction really don't have much effect on function. With swords, for example, the variations are endless and a bit more significant. I think they kind of lost out with hafted weapons though when they decided to make bizarre fictional double weapons instead of building up some more interesting fighting styles with spears, polearms, and staves. I mean what really is an urgrosh except a halberd with a funny name? Granted you can use a staff in a pretty flexible manner with Staff Training, but the funky weapons are better still. And what really is a spear but a staff with a pointy end? Ah well.
