D&D 5E Gloom Stalker Ranger

Oh, sure, you have a chance to get a really high score...and even a chance to get multiple really high scores...but on average, across all 6 scores, you shouldn't fare much better than point buy or standard array.

For example, the OP's stats (18/16/14/14/13/12) have an aggregate modifier of +13 (+4, +3, +2, +2, +1, +1). Based on a simple sim I just wrote, there's about a 1.5% chance of achieving that.

All I'm saying is that it's kinda strange that nobody ever (or never that I've seen) posts a thread like:

Because rolls like that are actually a lot more likely than 18/16/14/14/13/12
Sure, but the sub-par characters could be played and just let to die.

That was how D&D was played way back; if your character sucked (low HP or whatever), it just died. Then you rolled a new one.

In all the years of playing D&D (20+ at this point) I have never seen ability scores rolled end up with subpar scores in two or more ability scores. Those characters are usually smothered in the cradle and rerolled. I only the ones who has scores that were acceptable or amazing actually played.

Everyone talks about their 18, 16, 14, 13, 12, 12 character, nobody about their 12, 10, 9, 9, 7, 4 one... [emoji848]
Actually the post was supposed to be about dual wielding with a Gloom Ranger and if I had the game mechanics correct....lol

Fair, and it seems you did. Now we will argue the minutiae of rolled ability scores because that's what we do. [emoji39]
Tell you what. When I roll my character for the campaign I will be playing in ( my rogue ) I will post my stats no matter how they turn out. :)

Can anyone tell me if I have this correct?

I created a Human Varian Gloom Stalker Ranger at 3rd level. Taking the Human Variant I used the Feat for Dual Wielder which lets me use weapons which are not light. The Gloom Stalkers Deadly Ambusher Feature Increases my first round move to 40, increases my iniative by my Wisdom Bonus, and, if I attack the first round I get an extra attack which deals an extra 1d8 damage. I chose the Two Weapon Fighting Style from Ranger at 2nd level letting me add my ability bonus to my second attack. My ability I am using is my Dexterity which is an 18. I am using two ( 2 ) Rapiers.

So if I attack the initial round with both of my weapons and hit that is 2d8+8. I get the extra attack from the Deadly ambusher which is 2d8+4. This seems a lot, but by the way I read the rules this is what it should be. Am I right?
I would love to hear if you find the character fun to play. How do those first rounds go, and then how to the following rounds go? How is this PC out of combat?

Really have not thought much about the character other than the game mechanics. This is just for a one shot. I have put a lot of thought into my rogue character because I will probably be playing him for a year or so. We will be playing The Descent into Avernus campaign.

I hope the rogue is fun to play. I tied his background in with both Bregan D'aerthe and the Flaming Fist.

In Out of the Abyss I played a Gloom Stalker Ranger / Rogue Assassin multiclass. On a number of occassions my pass without trace enabled us to get surprise, which meant free crits (because assassin.)

I wish I had photos of my DM's expression when all those damage dice hit the table. It was so many dice that I would have to borrow from other players, just for the pleasure of rolling them all at once.

I thought about playing a multiclass Ranger/Rogue. For one reason my Rogue is tied to the ranger through the Flaming Fist. The one shot is a prequel to the main campaign. Our DM told us to create one with a tie to our main character.

Gloomstalker 5/Fighter 2/Assassin 3

+2 longbow, +1 arrows

1d8+8 per arrow:

6d8+48 raw damage
2d8 extra ambush damage
2d6 sneak attack damage

8d8+2d6+48 non-crit damage
16d8+4d6+48 crit damage.

That is a lot of dice.

134 average damage if everything hits.

(Note that fighter 2 > assassin 3, as an action surge is twice the dice and twice the static damage, and rests happen more often that surprise rounds usually).
