I've been thinking of the layout of the Inverted Spire that the latter part of my adventure will take part in.

So those of you who weren't around before the switch to these hosted forums, I will briefly explain the idea that the "Almighty" Nightcloak helped me out with. (I mean help as in come up with most of it.)

I am working on a series of adventures for my Eberron game that engage the PC's from 11th to up to 20th. I have the basic story arc down of major events, which have been semi explained before. They are actually helping the villain without knowing it, yada yada yada.

Well, working on one adventure at a time, i decided that the first part of the adventure would intail retrieving a large Dragonshard from a fortress in the depths of Khyber (Eberron's Underdark). Nightcloak came up with the idea of the fortress being a huge Stalagmite ( or Stalagtite, whatever) that is the fortress, that hangs above a huge pit. Thus, an Inverted Spire as I like to call it.

In the Spire, would be the HQ of a group of Cultists of the Dragon Below, who use the Dragonshard for various means. One such mean is empowering big Warforged like creatures with either Draconic or Fiendish proprerties. They also believe the pit is a way into the heart of the Dragon Below and such. I am sure I missed something, as I am tired and dont feel like looking back at the old thread.

I was just wondering if anyone has seen a good map that would work perfect for such a complex. An Inverted Spire.

I envision that final battle

Sorry to interject, but I'm in a bit of a rut myself.

Okay, so I'm a newb DM. I've run about 4 sessions now, and I'm pretty sure I'm getting everything under control. Roleplaying (both for myself and the group) is a lot easier and smoother. In that aspect, everything is smooth sailing.

My "campaign" so far is pretty loose. The only running theme so far is that all the adventures are circumstancial (Such as traveling through a village being attacked by an ettin). I guess to describe my problem, I need to lay out the story so far.

Okay, so the group spent level 0 (yes, we played it) 1 and 2 doing the usual nooblah intro type things. The group (level 3) get requisitioned to find out why vital merchant ships have stopped arriving in the merchant sea town to the east. The mayor (the person laying out the dilemma to the party) tells them they have two options: Overland via a swamp, which is rife with dangerous creatures (cr1 and 2 encounters, not that the PC's know, of course), or a much longer round trip, going to the floating docks to the north (three days overland travel) and sailing around the penisula to figure out what has been going on.
The PC's took the longer route, and ended up having to deal with a maurding ettin attacking a town. (He was actually a cleric who had been polymorphed, and became trapped in the ettins body).

Anyway, the PC's sailed around the peninsula, and became wrecked on coral, hen attacked by pirates. They rowed ashore, and were attacked by the rest of the band of pirates. This is where I ended the session. Basically the characters have to explore the camp enough to find clues that the pirates have been using a fake lighthouseto lure ships into the reef, before attacking them and yada yada yada

What I'm looking for now is some kind of continuity. Should I let this arc finish naturally, and introduce a BBEG that wil harass the characters, or try to expand on this story? I'm trying to move the story along, as out group does not get to meet as regularly as any of us would like, but I don't want to have to drop the serendipedous story right away either.

Whoah. If you read/followed that, you deserve a medal of some kind.

"Almighty" Nightcloak...

I have a number of employees who would add an explitive before that...

Sorry about that, I do get ahead of myself when I lock onto an idea :heh:

The floating tomb from the module 'Dragons of Desolation' could work well with some modifications. But really, any tower map (or citidal depending on size) would work with modifications. I'll go through my maps when I get home from work tonight.

It depends on your style of play and what the players like. To me it sounds like you want both ideas to a point, so...

How about the players do finish the pirates off and the BBEG, but then discover he is only the pirate prince of that area. He has documents that grant him 'looting rights' in that coastal region from a Pirate Queen who has organized all the pirates in the area. She is breaking the coastal waters up into fiefdoms of sorts where each pirate captain, or pirate prince now, gets exclusive title as part of joining the “Queen’s Kingdom”.

Sure, the princes don't like to pay tribute, but it is worth it do to: A) The pirate queen is brutal and dangerous to cross, and B) Exclusive looting rights is making them more gold than they ever have so it is a good deal for them.

The thing about this approach is that it allows you to break the big story up into smaller adventures easy to resolve. The players have to deal with different pirate princes, or intrigues in towns do to spies or guilds secretly working for the BBEG (Big Bad Evil Gal). Add a few corrupt nobles to the mix or even inland bandits to make the 'conspiracy' far reaching. Of course, the Pirate Queen is as evil and wicked as she is beautiful to really set up role-playing encounters down the road…

Eventually, they get the story adventure were they take on the Queen herself and end the whole conspiracy. Or does she get away to reverse things for the next story arc and starts hunting the players that disposed her kingdom?

Make it a cigar and martini please...

Darn it! Nightcloak beat me to it. I had a similar idea but I like his better. :D

Is that the Dragonlance module, part of the original series? Man i wish I had those.

Arrrrhh! Pyrates Eh?

You cant go wrong with a pirate adventure.....

You could even have a pyrate stronghold or base within the swamp...maybe a group of pyrates that were chained and left to die in the swamp, for an offense against the Pyrate queen...

PCs discover the UNDEAD pyrates and fight them as skeltons and zombies....
The destruction of their undead forms frees their spirits, that seek revenge against the Pyrate Queen....

The pyrate queen can be plagued by these "haunting Entities" and may hire the PCs to fee her from the curse... ...Maybe they find an ancient treasure in the ruins that the Pyrate Queen desires.....(watch pirates of the caribean for inspiration)

Actually a long story arc....with reoccuring pyrate encouters..could eventually lead the PCs to a later battle against the Spider queen.

FREEPORT- I think its by Green Ronin...looks like an awesome resource for setting a campaign...There are multiple suppliments and adventures.. You could plop it on an island "X" amount of miles off of the peninsula....

"Stand and Deliver Matey...or you'll feel me rusted cutlass!"

Does anyone else feel bored with their WIP? I can't really tell whether it's because it is crap or it is just me not getting enough chance to use it/get feedback on it....but bleh. Just wanted to say that.

Yep. It is the 4th module.

The series is good and chocked full of flavor. But the maps are fabulous. I've copied and recycled those maps a bunch of times. The first adventure, Dragons of Despair features a sunken city rendered in a 3D format that is incredible.
