GMs, why are *you* doing the GMing in your group?

Are you GMing out of desire or necessity?

GM, ergo sum.

I started off as the GM, many and many a moon ago, because I was the only one who had the rules and the inclination to run the game. Since that time, I have continued to GM, in many different systems with several different groups. I put together my current gaming group out of wholecloth and now we have biweekly fun!

I love setting up worlds. I enjoy tweaking the rules to fit the world. I like doing all the funny voices. While I like playing (and am always up for a game with a good GM), in the end I love creating the general pattern of the story and allowing the characters to create the specifics.

Gaming is a shared interest. The GM does not have a game without the players and vice-versa. In the end, though, I prefer being on the chart side of the screen. It's where I get my jollies. ;)

I enjoy it, and it's the easiest way to satisfy my desires for a particular style of play. I get frustrated with certain things quickly when others GM, and I tend to like to take charge of things in general (which may exacerbate my annoyance at certain aspects of others' GM style(s)). Anyway, I know I'm far from perfect, but I tend to think I do a pretty good job of balancing storytelling with gamist aspects of RPGs, and I keep a pretty cool head when the going gets rough.

And it doesn't hurt that I almost always have a game ready. :)

Shil's in India for the summer. Plus, I wanted to try running a no-holds barred high level campaign (Well nearly no holds barred, somethings are just too obscene for actual use. I'm looking at you Boomerang (Talenta) + associated feats/powers Avi put together.

I'm the current GM for our group because I wanted to run a Lone Wolf RPG campaign. Even better would be the chance to PLAY in a Lone Wolf game, but hey, you take your fix where you can get it :)

Other than that, the main DM is on hiatus for a while...I think he got a bit disgruntled at the way the party blew through the challenges he set up with such ease.

We also have two other players GMing on-and-off. One is running us through The Crypt of the Devil Lich (Dungeon Crawl Classics #14 by Goodman Games, IIRC) whenever we need to break from the usual game for a bit of deadly dungeon crawling. He has a couple of other plans in mind, too, centering on d20 Modern type stuff. A third guy is running a low-level Eberron campaign that just started - the plan is to switch back and forth, a week or two at a time.

I do it because I enjoy it and in both groups I game with more than one person is willing to DM so there is no shortage of volunteers (seems like an uncommon situation).

I enjoy GMing, creating the world and seeing how the players react. Also because my goal in life is to actually create a game situation that will amaze and surprise one of my other players (and frequent GM). That ain't ever gonna happen, but we all need goals, right?

(Hmm...what a great idea, a bardic spell for GMs. "Create, create, create, create the fabulous dungeon...")(Or not.)
