GMs, why are *you* doing the GMing in your group?

Are you GMing out of desire or necessity?

Ummm, both? I enjoy running more than playing, but I do like playing (or would if I got the chance more than once or twice a year...) The group prefers playing my campaigns more than the other options. My ideal would be run 2 or 3 games, play in 1. (playing twice a week would be nice too...)

There's only one other person in my group I'd feel at all comfortable playing under. I've a number of very good players, but I don't think they'd make good GMs. I much prefer to GM, myself. Playing can be fun, occasionally, but the part of the game I enjoy the most is worldbuilding and weaving plots together and running everything in the background...

I love GMing.

A middle option would have been nice, but I chose because I enjoy doing it. My friends all agree that I am the best DM, and because very few of them like being DM, and even less are good at it, I am DM over 95% of the time. I would like to play once in a while, but the problem is I want to play with a good DM, which means I need some new friends :) .

I only DM. I am not much interested in playing. The payoff is the between sessions crativity where I get to do cool stuff. When the game session ends for the players - the game *ends* for them. They have to wait 2-4 weeks for the game to start again in my campaign.

In contrast, when the game session ends - the fun for me is just beginning :) I put a lot of work in to my art, maps and adventure creation between sessions. It's a creative process that I love. Playing could never give me that sense of reward and fulfillment. As a DM, the game is always there. The sessions are just play-testing :)

It's a cross between the two, but it's more because I like to DM. Everyone at the table agrees that I'm the best DM. No one else is willing to put in the time and effort to make a good game, or isn't so good at keeping the ball rolling.

I voted because I have to but I absolutely do love to do it.
Up until Third Edition I only DMed because if I wanted to play the game I love I had to run it.
No one else wanted to do it or invest the time to do it.
Now my gaming group includes another DM and we take turns gaming different games.
