GMs, why are *you* doing the GMing in your group?

Are you GMing out of desire or necessity?

I enjoy the job. However, I started because our original was frequently a no-show for sessions.

Yeah, I was just thinking that a "why did you start GMing" question would be cool. Way back in the day, I was stuck with some seriously broken games under a couple of GMs and opted to take on the reins because I didn't want to kill deities with impunity, I wanted a storyline. :D

I really love playing, but out of the people I know, one says he will DM and never does and the other only DMs low magic worlds so if I want to see magic, I have to DM. It is fun for the most part, until the Player who says he is going to DM and newver does, argues with ya about everything :)

Bolth... I DM for fun (more because i wanted to try it and i'm still doing it because i have fun with it) But we had two people try to Dm they did a good job but stopped about 2 months in (or one game session)... So i kinda have to to keep gamging going.. I can tell you for sure that two of my player would be the worst DMs ever... and i mean ever... one is dumb as a rock (and she is playing the party cleric) the other can't add attack mod to his dise rolll with out help...

sorry off topic... Bolth

If GMing wasn't fun for me I wouldn't do it. Life is too short to engage in unfun activities.

Especially too short to engage in DMing if it's unfun. For an adventure that's part of the story arc in my homebrew, I've spent up to four hours of prep time per hour of play time. Part of that is because one character is constanty fighting an internal battle with devilish influences, and I've learned to prepare for both "personalities" at any given moment. Part of it, though, is that I love putting tons of detail into the world around the characters, and it's growing with them.
