Gnomes in the MM!

I think the addition of tieflings is cheesy and just an attempt to cater to the "I wanna be a demon/devil!" crowd.
I think retaining gnomes in the PHB would be cheesy and just an attempt to cater to the "I wanna be short!" crowd.

Gnomes are a major part of my current campaign, and an important part of my game world. Yet another reason why I will not be switching to 4e. Heck, I have two players who want to play gnomes if their current characters die. Couldn't do that in 4e.

In case you missed it, the whole point of this thread is that gnomes *will* be in 4e. Specifically in the Monster Manual. Further, designers have noted that some of the Monster Manual creatures will be getting PC style write-up notes.

Also, is it *that* tough to come up with a gnome racial write-up? I mean, it's not like they've got very confusing or involved racial abilities. Just use the dwarf write-up in 4e and substitute in some gnomish bits until the official write-up arrives.

One thing to note, while several Monster Manual entries will get play-as-PC writeups, I'm guessing they won't have as extensive options once they begin advancing as the core PHB races will (such as options specifically for dwarven fighters vs. elvish fighters.) In that regard they still won't be quite up to snuff with those races.

Just sayin'

That could be an issue if the gnomish write-up in the MM is lacking in details or options. Considering their importance to the Eberron setting and presence in many other established D&D worlds, I would guess that they (and any former PH races not found in the 4e PH) will rapidly get full write-ups in an article in Dragon if their MM write-up is sparse. No doubt competing against a crowd of gnomish write-ups from fans. Actually, one of the primary issues with gnomes is their multiplicity of focus. Are they woodland fey, living underneath roots and speaking with burrowing animals? Slim dwarfs with big noses, a love of gems, a sense of humor and access to the illusionist class? Comedy relief pranksters with a fondness for the jester and bard classes? Mechanically talented tinkerers? Experimental alchemists? Shadowy manipulators with a love of intrigue? Is a racial write-up going to try to include all of these, some of these, none of these? It's a significant challenge. I don't think any single gnome write-up will be able to keep from disappointing a significant segment of gnome fans. So I suspect we're going to see write-ups for Tinker Gnomes, Eberron Gnomes, Oerth Gnomes, Et Cetera Gnomes.....

The fact that this set shows up in many videogames I like, and would make a great set of elemental summoned creatures, is not an ulterior motive at all. Honest. ;)

However, you must admit that having the gnomes manifest as a rain of nuclear missiles on the enemy would be too much.

I have gnomes as a PC race in my current campaign, and nobody ever wants to play one. Ever. :\

I didn't miss it, I just don't agree with their removing the gnome from the PH and dumping them into the MM with only a passing reference to being a PC race. My personal, and highly biased opinion is that they are doing this because the designers can't come up with creative ways of playing gnomes. I've seen it mentioned several times that they have no idea what to do with gnomes in the past, and that they would rather not deal with them.

Tieflings (BTW, I find that name rather infantile sounding, but that is me) to me, are a monster, or a creature from another dimension or realm. They are the ones that belong in the MM and not in the PH. I swear it is just catering to the video game crowd. It's hard to explain, but that's how I feel.
