Go go godzilla!!!!

In Japan, the weathermen even have unique icons for him and his kind...

"Today, partly cloudy with 10% chance of Ghidora."

I believe the Godzilla creature was statted out as a "Gargantua" (monster name, not Size description) in the 2ed Kara-Tur expansion for Oriental Adventures. There was a Reptilian, an Insectoid, and a Humanoid version.

The reptilian version didn't have a breath weapon, though that's no excuse as to why you couldn't add one. :)

Sorry. But after reading that Wikipedia entry, it seems pretty obvious that the only part of the folklore used as inspiration for the original D&D Tarasque,
was just the name and it's habit of devastating the country-side.

The physical description of the Tarasque of French Folklore is completely different from the physical description of the D&D Tarrasque.

The D&D Tarasque's physical description is much more consistent with Godzilla.

I'd say that likely, both were the inspiration for the D&D version.

B-)

The carapace on the modern version looks about right, but why did they make it bipedal when the original version had six legs?

well, obviously they adjusted it to fit better and make it less cheesy. They've done that with a lot of monsters. Remember the old Chimera pictures? I'm glad they revamped things over time, because I always had a hard time fighting a monster that looked ridiculous - Hard to swing a sword while laughing.
