Just got back from seeing it with my brother, and we were both having the same problem: our fear was warring with our confusion. Yeah, I really like it, too, when movies leave a lot of ambiguity so watchers can speculate, but there wasn't any real indication as to what the nature of the creature, Toshio (and the cat, though I think it and Toshio are the same entity), the house, and the grudge. So all I had to figure out was the timeline.
